This year Mother’s Day is on Sunday 19th March 2023 and I know it’s something that people start planning and thinking about weeks before. Whether you want to buy your mum the perfect gift or organise a day out to spoil her, it’s bound to be an important day on your calendar.
I thought it would be helpful to put together options of things to do for the Mother’s Day weekend in case you’re stuck for inspiration. From the cheap and cheerful to the extravagant, here’s a whole host of ideas for you including any special Mothers Day events across Hampshire too.
Things to do for Mother’s Day in Hampshire
A day out at a National Trust property is always a great choice that everyone from young children to grandparents will enjoy. There are so many National Trust properties in Hampshire, many of which have trails to enjoy, play areas and beautiful walks too.
It’s always nice to just go out and get some fresh air and so a walk could be a lovely way to spend a chunk of Mothers Day. The New Forest National Park is always lovely for a walk – and dog friendly too! Also, Hogmoor Inclosure and Castle Bottom are two of our favourite places to walk and you can find more inspiration for family walks in Hampshire here.
Days Out in Hampshire
If you’re looking for more than just a walk, a full day out could be just the thing. Marwell Zoo, Hurst Castle and Beaulieu Motor Museum are all great choices with tea rooms and plenty to see and do.

Art & Culture
You might prefer to spend the day wandering around a museum, taking in an art gallery or simply immersing yourself in the art and culture that Hampshire has to offer. There’s so much to see and do in Hampshire, and here are our favourites:
- The Arc – Winchester
- West End Centre – Aldershot
- Ashcroft Arts Centre – Fareham
- Sea City Museum – Southampton
Theatre Shows in Hampshire
Theatre show are a fantastic way to celebrate any occasion and Hampshire has so much to offer this year. From the laughs of Michael Mcintyre: Work In Progress and an evening with Prue Leith at The Anvil to Othello at Theatre Royal Winchester.
Cinemas in Hampshire
Going to a cinema could be another nice option and a really relaxed way to spend Mother’s Day. There are new films being released all the time and our top pick for Mothers Day would be the 10th Anniversary release of Bridesmaids, I can’t wait to see it!
Spa Treats in Hampshire
Going on spa days is such a lovely way to celebrate Mothers Day and treat mum, plus we have so many great spas across Hampshire. From the wonderful spa at the Solent Hotel to the SenSpa at Careys Manor or the indulgent offerings at Champneys Forest Mere or the Chewton Glen spa. There are spa options to suit every budget.
You could always extend the treat by making it into a spa break, adding a hotel room and dinner to the experience. Or, alternatively, you may just want a lovely treatment together without making a full day or break of it. In this case, The Massage Company are just outside of Hampshire but offer fantastic massage packages for two.
Shopping in Hampshire
A day full of shopping, chatting and stops for tea and cake is pretty much my favourite way to spend Mothers Day and there are plenty of places that are great for shopping. You could visit West Quay in Southampton, have a wonder around Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth or spend the day at Festival Place in Basingstoke.
Mothers Day Lunch in Hampshire
No Mother’s Day is complete without a lovely meal to celebrate and there are so many great options in Hampshire for a nice Mother’s Day brunch or Mother’s Day Sunday lunch. The Aviator in Farnborough and the Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire often have fantastic packages for Mother’s Day.
A chef at home experience could be a great alternative to eating out too. You save money as can provide your own alcohol but the chef saves you having to cook so you can simply enjoy time with your family. Here are a couple of options:
Afternoon Tea in Hampshire
Instead of a formal meal, traditional afternoon teas can be a great option. With finger sandwiches, cake, scones with clotted cream and so many teas to choose from, afternoon tea always goes down well.
We love popping to Bills or Cafe Rouge for an informal afternoon tea any time or you might prefer the more fancy surroundings of a nice hotel like The Winchester Hotel, New Park Manor Hotel or Oakley Hall Hotel. Alternatively, there are some lovely cafes that do fantastic afternoon tea like The Parlour Tea Rooms, The Orangery Tea House or Parade Tea Rooms.
