What Can You Cook in a Slow Cooker?

I always get questions about what you can and can’t put in a slow cooker so I thought I’d put all the questions here and answer them. I’ll add to the post as I get more questions and hopefully it will give you peace of mind when using your slow cooker and also some recipe inspiration at the same time. I love nothing more than getting in the kitchen and rustling up a slow cooked meal!

What can I cook in a slow cooker?

I always get asked the same question – can you cook anything in a slow cooker? And you can definitely cook most things but I think saying you can cook anything is pushing it a little. Some things just aren’t designed for slow cooking.

For example, if something is made to be fried or traditionally roasted then you’ll be able to cook it in a slow cooker but the results won’t be quite the same as if you’d cooked in the way it was initially intended. It’ll still be delicious but I can always tell whether something has been cooked in the oven or slow cooker.

So, what to cook in a slow cooker?

Slow cookers are fantastic for many meals. You can go out and leave them to cook, knowing they’ll be ready when you get home from work. They’re also great for side dishes, desserts and even drinks. Slow cookers are easy to use and fantastic to experiment with too.

Can you cook meat in a slow cooker?

This is something people always ask. Can you put meat in a slow cooker? And if so, can you put raw meat in a slow cooker? The shortest answer is yes on both counts. Slow cookers are made for cooking meals and that includes meals with meat in.

To make slow cooking as easy as possible, you can put raw meat straight in the slow cooker and it will be absolutely fine, cooked perfectly when you’re ready for dinner.

I know many people brown meat first but we hardly ever do, as we’re usually in a rush to get the slow cooker on in the morning, and it still turns out delicious.

Can you cook lamb in a slow cooker?

Lamb is one of our favourite things to cook in a slow cooker. Lamb gets more tender the longer you cook it for and so a Slow Cooked Lamb Stew or Lamb Slow Cooker Hotpot are perfect in the slow cooker. We also love a lamb curry like our easy Slow Cooker Lamb Rogan Josh where the flavour just keeps maturing the longer you cook it for.

You can even cook a slow cooker roast lamb leg if you want to make your Sunday lunch that bit easier. A slow cooker leg lamb roast is the perfect centrepiece! 

Can you cook bacon in a slow cooker?

You can cook bacon in a slow cooker but we much prefer the ease of cooking bacon under the grill, cooking bacon in the Airfryer or even in cooking bacon in the microwave. But, if you only have a slow cooker it could be a valid option – and slow cooked bacon strips would be perfectly edible!

You can also cook a joint of bacon in the slow cooker and can add raw bacon to many meals like Hunter’s Chicken, Poor Man’s Cassoulet or maybe a Split Pea and Bacon Soup.

Can you cook mince in a slow cooker?

Mince is a staple in our house and it’s one of the meats that we use most often in the slow cooker. From slow cooker beef chili or bolognese sauce to keema curry or a rich cottage pie filling. Mince is such a versatile product to cook with and that doesn’t stop when it comes to the slow cooker.

Can you cook beef in a slow cooker?

Beef is another meat that just gets more and more tender the longer you cook it. Whether you make a lovely slow cooked beef casserole, a hot pot, a beef curry or a chunky beef chili, it’s definitely something you can put in the slow cooker and have ready when you are.

You can even cook a lovely slow cooker roast beef recipe. Any beef joint works well in the slow cooker and a slow cooker beef roast is a great addition to any Sunday lunch – especially with a splash of red wine!

Can you cook corn beef in a slow cooker?

Depending on where you are in the world, corn beef can mean two different things – and create very different meals. Here in the UK, corned beef is a tinned beef used in a variety of economical meals. Slow Cooker Corned beef hash is the first that comes to mind and works really well in the slow cooker.

Elsewhere, corn beef is a salt cured brisket of beef. It makes a fantastic Sunday lunch and works well slow cooked in the slow cooker. It gets more tender the longer you cook it for and the flavour matures beautifully too. You can’t beat a slow cooker brisket. 

Can you cook steak in a slow cooker?

We use steak in so many of our slow cooker meals like a nice slow cooker beef stew, beef casserole or slow cooker steak and ale pie. But, you may just want to cook a steak in the slow cooker to have with chips or a side of mashed potatoes. And you’ll be glad to know you can cook all kinds of steak in the slow cooker.

Can you cook ribs in a slow cooker?

Ribs are one of our favourite things to cook in the slow cooker and we love our maple glazed ribs recipe – although it does need finishing off under the grill. There are also some fantastic recipes for barbecue ribs cooked in the slow cooker.

You can guarantee, when you cook ribs in the slow cooker, that the meat will just fall of the bone. Slow cooker ribs are such a tasty meal that the whole family will love, perfect for a busy weeknight.

Can you cook pork in a slow cooker? And can you cook pulled pork in a slow cooker?

Pork is another great meat to cook in the slow cooker as it gets more tender and moist the longer it’s cooked for. We have slow cooked pork tenderloin a few times which is always delicious but you can also cook a boneless pork shoulder in the slow cooker to create a lovely slow cooker pulled pork. There really is nothing like a pulled pork slow cooker dish. 

Can you cook pork belly in a slow cooker?

Pork belly is something I had never been able to cook properly until I started cooking it in the slow cooker. I put together all our favourite slow cooker pork belly recipes and it really is such a tasty cut of meat when cooked properly.

Can you cook oxtail in a slow cooker?

Oxtail is something that we never cook but, people love to cook it in the slow cooker! The most popular recipes are slow cooker oxtail stew or a classic oxtail soup. There are so many different recipes and they all sound so hearty and delicious.

Can you cook chops in a slow cooker?

Chops are fantastic cooked in the slow cooker. The meat gets lovely and tender and, if the chops have bones, the meat usually falls straight off them. Some of our favourite dishes to cook in the slow cooker are slow cooker pork chops as they get much more tender than cooking any other way, and lamb chops.

Can you cook ham in a slow cooker?

Ham is great to cook in the slow cooker. Whether you’re cooking ham for a Sunday roast, to have with egg and chips or to slice and have in sandwiches and other dishes, the slow cooker works perfectly. Slow cooker honey glazed ham is a real family favourite.

Can you cook gammon in a slow cooker?

Gammon works in exactly the same way as cooking ham – and it turns out delicious! Some of the most popular recipes involve fizzy drinks – slow cooker gammon in cola or slow cooker irn bru gammon! I think any fizzy drink could be tried with this for different results with a slow cooker gammon joint. Some slow cooker gammon recipes also use apple juice or cider.

Can you cook liver in a slow cooker?

Liver is something else we don’t really eat at home but I remember having it quite often as a child. All those classic dishes you can definitely cook in the slow cooker – like slow cooker liver and onions! You can also cook slow cooker chicken livers or maybe make a slow cooked liver pate.

Can you cook sausages in a slow cooker?

Sausages are one of our favourite things to cook as they are cheap, hearty and delicious. From a simple slow cooker sausage pasta to our poor man’s cassoulet to a lentil and sausage hot pot. Sausages couldn’t be easier to cook in the slow cooker and you can cook plain sausages in the slow cooker too.

Can you cook hotdogs in a slow cooker?

So, if you can cook traditional sausages, what about hot dogs? Can you cook hot dogs in slow cookers? The answer is yes – and it’s fantastic if you’re cooking for many people at once as the slow cooker can keep the hot dogs ready until you are.

Can you cook brats in a slow cooker?

Brats – or bratwurst sausages – can also be cooked in a slow cooker! You can have slow cooker brats cooked traditionally in beer or maybe brats with onions and peppers. There are so many options and cooking brats is just like cooking other sausages – they’re incredibly versatile.

Can you cook haggis in a slow cooker?

Another popular dish – certainly at a Burns Night Supper, who doesn’t love haggis?! Haggis can definitely be cooked in the slow cooker and there are so many great, traditional recipes for slow cooked haggis online to choose from. It’s a pretty simple thing to cook – and served with mashed potatoes and mashed swede or turnip or even an occasional baked potato. 

Can you cook poultry in a slow cooker?

You can cook all different types of poultry in a slow cooker but meat on the bone works best to keep everything nice and moist. If you cook diced chicken for too long in a slow cooker it can go dry. We stick to cooking chicken or turkey legs, whole chickens and other chicken portions – chicken breasts or chicken thighs – with the bone or boneless skinless chicken in when making chicken slow cooker recipes.

Can you cook turkey in a slow cooker?

You can cook turkey in a slow cooker but you’d find it difficult to fit a whole turkey in a slow cooker. Instead, we often cook slow cooker dishes using a turkey leg or two – which is easily enough meat for a few people. Our slow cooker turkey, sausage stew is a recipe we often cook over the festive period.

Can you cook pheasant in a slow cooker?

Pheasant is a great thing to cook in the slow cooker and there are so many ways of cooking it. From pot roasted pheasant to a slow cooker pheasant casserole full of succulent pheasant pieces, you can pretty much treat pheasant as you would chicken. It just tastes much more gamey!

Can you cook chicken in a slow cooker?

Chicken is one of our staples to cook with in the slow cooker. We often pot roast a whole chicken or cook chicken portions. Plus, we make a lot of curries and casserole with chicken thighs where we remove the bones just before serving.

Can you cook duck in a slow cooker?

Duck is another meat that you can pot roast or use in a variety of dishes in the slow cooker. Crock pot Duck l’Orange, slow cooker duck curry or a traditional duck confit. If you like eating duck then definitely give cooking it in the slow cooker a try.

Can you use meat substitutes in a slow cooker?

You can definitely cook vegetarian or vegan meat substitute products in the slow cooker. Things like vegetarian sausages work well in slow cooker dishes but you do need to adjust cooking times accordingly. Many vegetarian products don’t need to be cooked for as long as their meat alternative so you’ll have to reduce cooking times to make sure the meat free products keep their shape during the cooking process.

Can you cook Quorn in a slow cooker?

Cooking with Quorn using a slow cooker isn’t recommended as cooking at low temperatures for a long time can change its texture. However, I have seen plenty of recipes that use frozen Quorn mince and slow cooker Quorn Pieces in a slow cooker without any issues.

Can you cook meat from frozen in a slow cooker?

This is a question that gets asked again and again – can you cook frozen meat in the slow cooker – and the most simple answer is no. Raw meat poses a real threat of food poisoning if not cooked properly and it take a long time for food in a slow cooker to reach an optimum temperature to kill any bacteria. This means cooking frozen meat poses much more of a problem.

It’s just not safe to cook meat from frozen in a slow cooker. We always defrost meat completely first or, if using something like frozen mince that you can typically cook from frozen, we’ll cook it on the hob first before transferring to the slow cooker pot.

Can you cook fish in a slow cooker?

Fish is fantastic cooked in the slow cooker and there are so many recipes available and so many ways to cook fish that you’ll always have something new on the menu. Our favourite is our Slow Cooker Fish Pie. You can also make fish stewfish curry or a lovely fish chowder. There are so many great fish slow cooker recipes!

Can you cook salmon in a slow cooker?

You can definitely cook salmon fillets in the slow cooker, just like pretty much any other fish. You can use it in recipes, cook it in a sauce or cook it by itself, seasoned to perfection. I’ve also seen recipes for slow cooker salmon curry and salmon risotto that look delicious!

Can you cook carbs and pulses in a slow cooker?

Carbs and pulses are a staple of any meal and they cook really well in the slow cooker. Whether you want to add potatoes or lentils to a dish or cook a simple side dish, the slow cooker is the answer! It’s such a versatile machine to use.

Can you cook potatoes in a slow cooker?

We always put potatoes in the slow cooker either in stews and curries or as part of a hot pot or mashed potato topped pie. But you can also cook things like garlic parmesan potatoes, gratin potatoes or loaded potatoes. Potatoes work fantastically well in the slow cooker.

Can you bake a potato in a slow cooker?

Everyone seems to bake potatoes in the slow cooker and it must be so nice to come home from work and know you’ll have a freshly baked jacket potato waiting for you as soon as you’re ready. They’re so easy to bake and turn out delicious.

Can you cook mashed potatoes in a slow cooker?

Mashed potato in the slow cooker is a new discovery of mine and people either make mashed potato leaving the skins on as a super easy side dish or the traditional way, peeling the potatoes first. Did you know you could make mash in the slow cooker? No, I didn’t until recently either. Slow cooker mashed potatoes – a complete game changer!

Can you boil potatoes in a slow cooker?

You can boil peeled potatoes in the slow cooker but you’d have to get the timings just right. If you leave them to slow cook for hours you’ll be halfway to mashed potato! But, you can easily cook new potatoes and other baby potatoes in the slow cooker or any potatoes that you leave the skins on.

Can you cook chips in a slow cooker?

You may think that chips are a really odd thing to cook in a slow cooker but, it turns out you can cook potato wedges and french fries in a slow cooker!

Can you cook roast potatoes in a slow cooker?

Roast potatoes is one thing that I just haven’t tried yet. With no liquid needed, slow cooker roast potatoes turn out fantastically well and you can even parboil them to reduce the cooking time if you want as well.

Can you cook sweet potatoes in a slow cooker?

Sweet potatoes are such a versatile vegetable and you can cook them in so many ways. Baked whole, as sweet potato wedges or in a wide variety of meals. You could make a slow cooker sweet potato curry or sweet potato stew or even slow cooked sweet potato mash.

Can you cook rice in a slow cooker?

We often cook rice in a slow cooker in dishes like paellarisotto or a nice pilaf but you can also cook plain rice in the slow cooker. Slow cooker rice cooks until the water is completely absorbed, leaving the rice light, fluffy and ready to eat.

Can you cook couscous in a slow cooker?

Couscous is just like rice really, you cook it in the slow cooker until the water is absorbed. You can add whatever flavours you like, making delicious Mediterranean couscous, vegetable couscous or just keep it plain.

Can you cook pasta in a slow cooker?

Pasta is something else that we often cook in meals in the slow cooker like bolognese or simple pasta dishes. But, you can also boil pasta in a slow cooker – although it’s more like baking, and takes a lot longer, the finished pasta will still be cooked and edible!

On that note, can you put uncooked pasta in a slow cooker?

Uncooked dry pasta works perfectly in the slow cooker. Fresh pasta doesn’t take very long to cook and so it can easily overcooked in a slow cooker but all kinds of dry pasta work well in the slow cooker, as part of a dish

Can you cook lentils in a slow cooker?

We often add a handful of lentils to slow cooker dishes and have made things like lentil curry and slow cooker lentil soup in the slow cooker. But, you can also cook slow cooker lentils â€“ a hearty dish with loads of flavour added. Perfect for the colder months!

Can you cook beans in a slow cooker?

Beans work so well in the slow cooker – added to recipes or made into a dish all of their own. You can cook dried beans in the slow cooker and make all sorts of things like a nice bean chilli or homemade baked beans in the slow cooker too.

Can you cook barley in a slow cooker?

Pearl barley is something you can cook quite easily in a slow cooker. But you can also add it to things like slow cooker stews or slow cooker soups just as you would lentils to add some extra bulk and flavour.

Can you cook quinoa in a slow cooker?

Like other grains and pulses, you can cook quinoa in a slow cooker. It’ll turn out just as if you’ve cooked it in more traditional methods and is great for cooking in bulk and eating through the week.

Can you cook chickpeas in a slow cooker?

Chickpeas are fantastic for adding to dishes in the slow cooker – like a nice spicy tagine. But, you can also cook chickpeas on their own in the slow cooker.

Can you bake in a slow cooker?

You can definitely bake in a slow cooker. I’ve seen so much made over the years from bread and rolls to cookies, cakes and brownies. Nothing surprises me when it comes to the slow cooker anymore – not even slow cooker baking!

Can you cook bread in a slow cooker?

Apparently, once you’ve used the slow cooker to bake bread you’ll never bake it any other way. There are great recipes for making white bread in the slow cooker, no yeast bread and also wholemeal bread in the slow cooker. You can also bake sourdough, cheese and bacon bread and even dinner rolls. Why not bake your next loaf in the slow cooker?

Can you cook pastry in a slow cooker?

Another common question is can you cook pastry in a slow cooker. We often make lazy pies – with just a pastry top, and they cook pretty well in the slow cooker. Shortcrust pastry, puff pastry or filo work well when cooking a pie with just a top in the slow cooker.

Can you cook cake in a slow cooker?

I have seen so many recipes for cake in the slow cooker – slow cooker chocolate cakecarrot cake and even a pineapple upside down cake. You can cook pretty much any slow cooker cakes – red velvet cakebanana cake â€“ the limit is your imagination!

Can you cook Christmas cake in a slow cooker?

Yes, you can even cook a Christmas cake in the slow cooker. You could go for a traditional boozy one that will last for ages or an alcohol free version that won’t have as long a shelf life but may be more suitable for children to enjoy too – I know I hated the alcohol flavour of Christmas cakes when I was little!

Can you cook a steamed pudding in a slow cooker?

This is one that confuses people because, when making a steamed pudding in the slow cooker, you still use a traditional pudding basin, surrounded by water, and cook the pudding as you usually would – just in the slow cooker!

Because of this you can make all kinds of steamed pudding in the slow cooker – treacle sponge pudding, golden syrup sponge pudding, gingerbread pudding or even a classic spotted dick in the slow cooker!

Can you cook vegetables in a slow cooker?

We are always cooking vegetables in the slow cooker. The vast majority of vegetables work really well in the slow cooker either on their own or as part of a dish. You can even use frozen vegetables in slow cooker dishes.

Can you cook kale in a slow cooker?

Kale is something we are always adding to stews and other dishes we make in the slow cooker but you can also cook kale by itself in the slow cooker. You can basically put kale and some stock in the slow cooker and leave it to do its thing. Tasty greens, super easily.

Can you cook cabbage in a slow cooker?

Cabbage is just the same as kale when cooking in the slow cooker really. We have cooked lovely Italian stews in the slow cooker in the past with cabbage added for the last bit of cooking time. But, you can also just cook cabbage in the slow cooker. Whether thing is a rich buttered cabbage recipe or a traditional braised red cabbage for Christmas, slow cooker cabbage sure to taste delicious.

Can you cook greens in a slow cooker?

Greens, or collard greens as they’re called in the US, are a staple side dish and yes, you can cook them in the slow cooker. Traditionally served with ham, slow cooker collard greens and ham is a fantastic slow cooker side dish. But you can also cook them without the meat and just have delicious slow cooker greens.

Can you cook artichokes in a slow cooker?

Artichoke is something I haven’t cooked often but I know it’s super easy to cook in the slow cooker. You can braise artichokes, stuff artichokes or have them covered in garlic and butter. Delicious!

Can you cook beets in a slow cooker?

Beetroot is something that I never know how to cook and try something different every time. But, you can cook beets in the slow cooker. Amazingly, you can cook beetroot in the slow cooker with very little prep – just add to the slow cooker and cook!

Can you cook carrots in a slow cooker?

Another veg that we love adding to pretty much any slow cooker dish, carrots are very much a staple in our house. But, you can also just cook carrots in the slow cooker to create so many wonderful side dishes. Glazed carrots, cinnamon carrots and even a mix of peas and carrots – such a wonderful side – all cooked in the slow cooker.

Can you put mushrooms in a slow cooker?

We love adding mushrooms to dishes that we cook in the slow cooker and they often find their way into stews and casseroles. But you can cook just mushrooms in the slow cooker too. Slow cooker garlic mushrooms are delicious!

Can you cook fruit in a slow cooker?

Fruit is very hit and miss with the slow cooker as some fruit goes sloppy quite easily. But, if you’re cooking a crumble or compote, fruit losing its consistency slightly isn’t really an issue. You can cook some fantastic fruit dishes in the slow cooker – slow cooker stewed fruit, slow cooker fruit compote, slow cooker jam and not to forget, poached pears!

Can you cook apples in a slow cooker?

We love a slow cooker apple crumble but you can also make crock pot baked apples, cook delicious apple pie fillings and stewed apples or make caramel apples! Apples are fantastic to cook with, are relatively cheap and work really well in the slow cooker.

Can you cook eggs in a slow cooker?

Eggs are something you don’t want to overcook so they don’t work that well in many slow cooker dishes although we have added them in at the end of some dishes like kedgeree. But, you can cook quite a few egg dishes in the slow cooker. Slow cooker scrambled eggs, omelettes – although we prefer making them in our omelette maker – and even Shakshuka – Italian poached eggs.

Can you boil eggs in a slow cooker?

Yes, you can even boil eggs in the slow cooker. Whether you want soft boiled eggs or hard boil eggs, they’re something you can make easily in the slow cooker. You can even make dyed Easter Eggs in the slow cooker!

What meals can you cook in a slow cooker?

Friends always say to me that they’ve thought about buying a slow cooker but have no idea what to use it for. What meals can you cook in a slow cooker? Where to start? And, honestly, you can cook pretty much anything in the slow cooker and we use it for full meals much more than we use it for side dishes or desserts. Can you cook soup in a slow cooker?

Soup is really popular to cook in the slow cooker and you can make so many different varieties. Unlike using a soup maker, when you cook soup in a slow cooker you may need to blend the finished soup to get your desired consistency – or have a lovely, hearty, chunky slow cooker soup.

Some of our favourites are slow cooker vegetable soup where you can use up so much leftover veg, slow cooker chicken noodle soup, slow cooker tomato soup and slow cooker French onion soup. Served with crusty bread, soup always makes a delicious meal.

Can you cook curry in a slow cooker?

Curry is one of our favourite things to cook in the slow cooker and we have so many favorite recipes. We love our chicken and lentil curry, chicken and spinach curry and vegetable rogan josh. You could also do a nice basic slow cooker chicken curry or a beef rogan josh.

Can you cook chili in a slow cooker?

Chilli is something else we love to cook in the slow cooker and you can make delicious beef chilli con carne with mince or a chunky slow cooker chili with beef chunks. Alternatively, you could make a vegetarian chilli or a lovely bean chilli for meat free versions.

Can you cook taco meat in a slow cooker?

Cooking a delicious taco meat filling is just like cooking chilli – and can be done in the slow cooker. Whatever meat you use in slow cooker tacos, or even if you make meat free tacos, you can make a delicious version in the slow cooker.

Can you cook fajitas in a slow cooker?

We love cooking our fajitas filling in the slow cooker â€“ and it’s pretty much like cooking a taco filling. It’s super simple to make slow cooker chicken fajitas or slow cooker beef fajitas and always the perfect dish to put in the middle of the table and everyone help themselves. Just add wraps, tortilla chips, sour cream, guacamole, salsa and grated cheese and you have such a sociable meal.

Can you cook paella in a slow cooker?

Paella is fantastic when cooked in the slow cooker and you can vary the recipes really easily. We often make chicken paella instead of using prawns for a traditional paella and you can make simple vegetarian slow cooker paella too.

Can you cook risotto in a slow cooker?

Risotto is really similar to a paella and something we eat often. Despite the myth that you need to stir it constantly, you can easily cook risotto in the slow cooker. Whether you want to cook slow cooker mushroom risotto, butternut squash risotto, chicken risotto or a ham and pea slow cooker risotto there will be a slow cooker recipe perfect for you.

Can you cook meatballs in a slow cooker?

Meatballs are one of our favourite family meals and they’re always super easy to bulk cook – making them perfect for cooking in the slow cooker. Whether you want slow cooker meatballs in a tomato sauce or meatballs in gravy – IKEA style – you’ll be able to cook them beautifully in the slow cooker.

Can you cook noodles in a slow cooker?

Noodles are another family staple in our house but not something we often think to cook in the slow cooker. However, you can cook noodles pretty much any way you like in the slow cooker. Honey garlic beef noodles, chicken lo mein, chicken chow mein or a chicken ramen. The only limit is your imagination!

Can you cook spaghetti in a slow cooker?

Just like noodles, spaghetti works well in the slow cooker. Whether you’re cooking slow cooker spaghetti and meatballs, spaghetti bolognese or a hearty baked spaghetti, there are so many slow cooker recipes the whole family will love.

Can you cook porridge in a slow cooker?

You probably wouldn’t think to cook porridge in the slow cooker but it couldn’t be easier – and you can even add your favourite flavours too. Basic slow cooker porridge, slow cooker coconut porridge, overnight slow cooker porridge or maybe slow cooker pumpkin porridge for the autumn. The slow cooker can do it all.

Can you cook oatmeal in a slow cooker?

Oatmeal works just the same as cooking porridge. It’s super simple to cook in the slow cooker and you can leave it as plain and creamy slow cooker oatmeal or add different flavours too.

Can you cook rice pudding in a slow cooker?
