The Droid Depot workshop at Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios is an unforgettable experience, especially for Star Wars fans. Little Man, who was 11, had an incredible time building his own droid, making it one of the highlights of our visit to Galaxy’s Edge. Having previously built custom lightsabers at Savi’s workshop, this was one unique experience that we hadn’t experienced yet.

The Droid Depot experience

As Little Man is 11, Dave had to accompany him throughout the experience. The Droid Depot requires adult supervision for children under a certain age, and Dave was, of course, more than happy to join in! This added a special element to the activity, as Dave was just as excited to see Little Man’s creativity and enthusiasm in action.

As they stepped into the Droid Depot, the immersive design immediately captivated them both. Shelves brimming with droid parts, the vibrant atmosphere, and the helpful cast members set the stage for a fantastic adventure.

The workshop feels like stepping into a real Star Wars location, complete with the hum of creativity and the buzz of droids coming to life. Little Man decided to build a C-series droid and was eager to pick out orange and grey parts, inspired by Chopper from the Star Wars Rebels show.

The conveyor belt filled with components that made the selection process really exciting, and Little Man enjoyed choosing the perfect pieces to bring his vision to life. You can also build a classic ‘R’ series or ‘B’ series droid, based on R2-D2 and BB-8 respectively.

The assembly process was straightforward and engaging. Each workstation is equipped with all the tools needed, and cast members provide clear instructions while encouraging creativity. Watching Little Man piece together his droid was a proud moment, it was all he had talked about since he found out that we’d booked the experience!

He worked diligently, focusing on every detail to ensure his droid looked just right. Once assembled, it was time to activate the droid. Seeing its lights flash and hearing the beeps for the first time was pure magic, and Little Man couldn’t stop smiling as he controlled it with the remote.

To make the experience even more special, Little Man upgraded his droid with a personality chip and a themed backpack. The personality chip gave the droid a playful and lively character, adding unique sounds and reactions.

The backpack, designed to fit seamlessly within the Star Wars universe, allowed Little Man to carry his droid around the park comfortably. These additions not only enhanced the droid’s personality but also made it easier for Little Man to show off his creation throughout the day.

The whole process only took us about 25 minutes, but you aren’t pressured to rush or anything and you can stay longer to find the perfect parts for your droid. Extra parts are also on sale and there are a total of nine personality chips available. There is an area just outside the workshop where you can deploy your droid and take them for a ride, and maybe even meet another newly created friend along the way.

The cast members at the actual Droid Depot deserve special recognition. Their enthusiasm and knowledge added to the experience, making it seamless and fun for guests of all ages. They were patient and encouraging, ensuring Little Man felt confident and excited throughout the process. They also shared fun Star Wars droid trivia, which kept the energy high and the experience immersive.

One of the most exciting features of the droid is its interactivity within Galaxy’s Edge. Cast members at rides were quick to point out that Little Man was harbouring a (Star) War(s) criminal when seeing Little Man’s droid, which was a great little easter egg for fans of Chopper! The droid also responded to various elements around the land, beeping and chirping as we explored.  This interactivity brought the droid to life in a way that felt truly magical, making Little Man feel like he was part of the Star Wars story. It turned an already memorable day into something extraordinary.

Droid Depot costs

Droid Depot is more than just a workshop; it’s a memory-making experience. Little Man’s droid isn’t just a souvenir; it’s a cherished reminder of a magical day. At $120 + tax for the custom building experience, it is a little pricey. The backpack and personality chip were also added extras, at $49.99 for the backpack with the personality chip discounted when we bought the backpack.

Getting the droid home

One thing that you might think about before booking your droid workshop experience is how to get the droid home afterwards. Well, it wasn’t a problem for us. The droid, or droid in the backpack, would easily fit in a suitcase. However, we took the backpack as hand luggage on our flight without any issues.

In our opinion, whether you’re a die-hard Star Wars fan or simply looking for a unique activity, this workshop is worth every penny. If you’re visiting Hollywood Studios, don’t miss the opportunity to create your own droid. It’s an adventure you’ll treasure forever and a great activity for adults and kids to enjoy together.
