Our Top Tips for Legoland Billund Holidays

In May half term we went to Billund for the second time and spent two days at Legoland Billund. It’s a fantastic day out and our favourite Legoland – having also been to Legoland Windsor and Legoland Florida.
I thought it might be useful to put together our top Legoland Billund tips, especially if you’re visiting from the UK, so that you can make the most of your trip and plan time at Legoland that the whole family will enjoy.
How to get to Legoland Denmark and Billund
Many UK cities fly direct to Billund and it takes just an hour and a half. We fly from London Stansted with Ryanair as it’s affordable and they do a good family travel package.
Once in Billund you can get a taxi easily from the airport – which costs under £20 each way – or you can get a bus which is really easy and costs around £3 per adult with children going free.
When is the best time to go to Legoland Billund
When visiting the Denmark Legoland Billund amusement park from the UK it’s best to travel at times when the UK have school holidays but it’s term time for Danish schools. This means that May half term and the very end of the summer holidays are the best time to visit Legoland.
We have visited in May half term both times and it has been lovely and quiet, with no more than about 10 minute queues for only the most popular Legoland Billund rides and warm weather, although showers are common at that time of year so pack a raincoat!
Where to stay for a Legoland Billund holiday
When travelling to Legoland Billund you will no doubt spend more than a day there. This means you’ll need somewhere to stay. Staying on site at the Hotel Legoland hotel or the Legoland Castle Hotel makes visiting Legoland super easy. Plus, they are beautiful hotels with great facilities and a good breakfast to start the day.
Alternatively, Lalandia is just over the road from Legoland Billund and has accomodation options to suit all group sizes and all with your own cooking facilities too. The Lalandia resort is a fantastic place to spend time and would be a great choice for a Legoland holiday.
Alternatively, there’s the Legoland Holiday Village which is also right next to Legoland. This offers many different types of accomodation and the option of breakfast on site too. There are also many hotels in and around Billund.
Where to get tickets to Legoland Billund
We have always found the best place to get Legoland Billund tickets is direct from Legoland. They offer a one day ticket or a combined ticket with one day at Legoland and one day at the Lego House. But, there’s always the option of getting annual passes too.
If you get a one day ticket, once inside the park you can make the most of a come back soon offer to return for a second day at a reduced rate.
What to bring to Legoland Billund
We always take a backpack to theme parks and for Legoland Billund we pack raincoats or ponchos for everyone – along with suncream for when the sun makes an appearance too! We also pack a lot of snacks from home as food is notoriously expensive in Denmark. And we also take refillable water bottles.
Luggage storage
If you are visiting Legoland Billund straight from the airport, or before heading home, you may have luggage to store. Legoland Billund have two different size luggage lockers available right near the entrance that cost from DKK 60 per day – around £7.
Eating at Legoland Billund
Legoland Billund has so many different eating options. There are places to buy fast food like burgers, chicken nuggets and hot dogs – as well as the iconic Lego chips! It costs about £10 per person for a fast food meal, slightly less for children.
Plus, there’s the pizza pasta buffet restaurant and lots of stands and shops selling ice creams, drinks, candy floss, cakes, chocolates and more. You will not go hungry at Legoland Billund.
Making the most of Legoland Rides
If visiting during the off peak times as suggested above, you won’t need any kind of queue jump pass. You will be able to get on all the rides with no problems at all. However, if visiting at peak times Reserve and Ride is available.
However, one ride you need to reserve is the Traffic School. If your children want to enjoy this experience, and get their own Lego driving licence too, make sure you go to the Traffic School as soon as the park opens to reserve your space. This does sell out. And, without giving any spoilers, it’s the best Legoland Traffic School experience we have ever had. It’s fantastic and not to be missed!
Make sure you don’t miss out on our favourite rides – Apocalypseburg Sky Battle, Atlantis by SEA LIFE, Emmet’s Flying Adventure – Masters of Flight, Flying Eagle and Polar X-plorer.
Wet rides at Legoland Billund
There aren’t a huge amount of water rides at Legoland Billund but you do get very wet on the Lego Canoe log flume ride, Viking River Splash and the Pirate Splash Battle ride plus there are water elements to the Jungle Racers, Mini Boats and Pirate Boats rides.
Arctic Icebreakers and Legoredo River are also water based Lego building so there’s bound to be a splash or two!
Rides for younger children
There are so many rides for young children so make sure, if visiting with little ones, that you don’t miss out! There’s a whole Duplo area with Duplo Express and Duplo Planes plus the Lego Train, Legotop observation tower and the Western Ride carousel.
Miniland
Miniland is somewhere you really need to make time for at Legoland Billund. See so much of Denmark and the rest of the world recreated using Lego bricks. It’s a fantastic place to spend time.
Don’t miss the play areas
As well as rides there are plenty of playgrounds for all ages to enjoy. Benny’s Playship in the Lego Movie area, Cole’s Rock Clim in the Lego Ninjago area, the Duplo Playhouses and the brand new LEGO DUPLO PEPPA PIG Playground.
There are so many places across the whole of Legoland Billund, with playgrounds everywhere, with plenty of seating for adults to relax and rest a while whilst the children play.
There are also water play areas – Arctic Icebreakers and Legoredo River – where you can build boats and then send them along the water, seeing how far they travel and seeing whether dams and buckets of water can hinder their progress.
Lastly, there are areas to play with Lego and get creative throughout Legoland Billund. These are great places for adults to take a load off, giving children literally hours of entertainment. They’re indoors too so great when the weather gets bad!
For Lego building fun, visit Arctic Basecamp, the Creative Workshop, Duplo Fun, LEGO Ferrari Build & Race, Legoland Gallery, Monster Wall and the Great Lego Reef.
Rent a stroller – or wheelchair!
Legoland Billund have strollers that you can hire to rest tired legs – or just help you store your possessions as you move around the park. The strollers cost DKK 150 per day – around £17. The strollers are single, metal pushchairs – not the big plastic moulded ones you would find at Legoland Windsor.
Don’t miss the aquarium!
Atlantis by Sea Life is a fantastic underwater adventure at Legoland Billund at one of our favourite experiences. Enjoy an immersive trip underwater before you make your way through a whole aquarium – including a fantastic underwater tunnel.
See a movie or show
Make sure you don’t miss the chance to sit down and watch a movie or a show during your time at Legoland Billund.
The 4D cinema shows a variety of movies on rotation through the day, each lasting around twenty minutes. It’s a lovely, air conditioned cinema that is so nice to spend time in – and the whole family will love the movies! Lego City 4D: Officer in Pursuit is our favourite.
There’s also the live action Castle Show – full of slapstick humour, stunts and plenty of water! And also plenty of chances to meet and greet your favourite Lego characters – and Peppa Pig too!
Get the Legoland Billund app
To make sure you don’t miss a thing, download the Legoland Billund app! It gives you access to a map, with your location shown on it in real time so you can easily find your way around.
It also has ride queue times, movie and show times, the times of meet and greets and where all the restaurants and amenities are. It’s a must for visiting Legoland Billund.
Dogs at Legoland Billund
Legoland Billund is dog friendly so you can feel free to take your dog with you. This won’t be possible for most UK visitors but it’s worth knowing that there will be dogs in the park – we saw a lot whilst we were there but they were all well behaved and under control.
