For Father’s Day this year we had a weekend break at Warwick Castle, staying in one of their Woodland Lodges. We’d previously stayed in the Warwick Castle hotel last Christmas and were excited to see what the lodges were like, and how they compared as an accomodation option.
We have invested in Merlin Annual Passes for the year and so it was great to tick another Merlin site off the list. We had a great day at Warwick Castle, and could have had a second day there with our annual passes if we’d wanted to but instead headed home for family Father’s Day celebrations.
Where are the Warwick Castle Woodland Lodges?
The Warwick Castle Woodland Lodges are pretty much right behind the Warwick Castle accomodation reception. As you drive into the Warwick Castle site you’re directed off to the accomodation car park which is right next to the reception building – which is also the Warwick Castle hotel – and just a stone’s throw from all the glamping options.

The car park, and accomodation, is just a short walk from the castle entrance and it would be lovely to relax at the accomodation in the morning, have a leisurely breakfast and then wander along to the castle ready for opening time. However, we drove to Warwick Castle in the morning and only checked into the accomodation after our day at the castle.

Staying at the Warwick Castle Woodland Lodges
When you book a stay at the Warwick Castle Woodland Lodges you are emailed everything you could need and given information on how to book breakfast and dinner if you want to. You can even check in remotely – which is what we did – simply picking up your room key cards from machines at reception when you’re ready to access your accomodation. This was a completely seamless process and we couldn’t wait to unwind in our lodge.

The Warwick Castle Woodland Lodges
After we’d picked up our keys we followed the directions to our lodge, across a nice wooden boardwalk straight out the back of the reception/hotel building, past the restaurant and bar, past a lovely wooden play area and past the glamping tents.

The lodges were laid out to give maximum privacy and to also make the most of all the green space around. We realised that we were in one of the furthest away lodges and at first were disgruntled by this, before realising that it meant we had the quietest lodge, further from the play area – that our kids were too big for – and in an area surrounded by wildlife. It was idyllic and definitely a lodge I would stay in again.

The Woodland Lodge was perfect for our needs. It had a bench outside so you could appreciate the surroundings and fresh air and doubled doors which opened on to the main room of the lodge – a nice big bedroom with plenty of storage space.

There were then a door to a separate bedroom – complete with bunk beds and a pull out trundle bed making the lodges perfect for a family of up to five people. All bed linen is provided and the whole lodge was a really nice, welcoming temperature – even on what had been one of the hottest days of the year so far.

The lodge also had a compact but functional shower room complete with complimentary toiletries and plenty of towels. There was also free wifi in the lodge – which worked really well, even when we were all using devices, and complimentary tea and coffee, complete with biscuits!

Dining at the Warwick Castle Woodland Lodges
There are a lot of dining options within Warwick Castle however, the castle closed at 4pm on the Saturday we visited so we found these to be more lunch options than dinner. However, the Warwick Castle accomodation also has a dedicated restaurant – Knight’s Table – where you can enjoy a buffet dinner which can easily be booked ahead of your trip. However, we weren’t that hungry so went for the other on site option – Knight’s Tavern.

Knight’s Tavern is set up like a traditional tavern, offering pub style food and drinks without needing to book in advance. This was great value, with quick service, and we had some lovely food – burgers and a flatbread – however, the salad we ordered left a lot to be desired and if I’d realised ahead of eating it I would have complained. It lacked half the listed ingredients and had been smothered in dressing to cover up the missing components. It really wasn’t the best.

However, the food and drinks were fine for what we wanted and definitely filled a gap. We went back to our lodge, relaxed and had an early night – sleeping so much better than we’d expected to. The site was so quiet overnight and the blackout curtains worked like a dream.

Breakfast at the Warwick Castle Woodland Lodges
The following morning we had breakfast at the Knight’s Table. We had breakfast here when we stayed at Warwick Castle last December and had a great experience, but sadly this time it was just so incredibly busy, with not enough tables to cater for everyone and mixed messages on the information received prior to arrival, the website and in the lodge on whether you had to book a table.

However, when we finally got into the restaurant the food was lovely. It’s a buffet with a great selection of cooked food as well as continental options, cereal and pastries. We all found food that we enjoyed and it was all well cooked. But the overall experience was quite stressful and harrassed compared to our previous visit.
Benefits of staying at the Warwick Castle Woodland Lodges
When you stay on site at Warwick Castle you get so many additional benefits. This includes free parking, unlimited wifi, breakfast and a whole array of evening entertainment – although we didn’t make use of this during our trip.

We did see Warwick Castle performers playing games with children and also teaching them archery, right next door to the Knight’s Tavern and play area which looked like a really nice evening set up for families visiting with younger children.

Alternatives to the Warwick Castle Woodland Lodges
As well as the Woodland Lodges, Warwick Castle also has the Warwick Castle Hotel rooms, Caesar’s Tower Suites and Medieval Glamping which is open seasonally. They are all great options for turning your trip to Warwick Castle into a longer break and over the festive season they also offer Santa Sleepovers too! Find out more here.

We had such a nice stay at Warwick Castle and despite the hiccup with breakfast – and a salad we won’t mention again – we would definitely stay at Warwick Castle in the future.
