Afternoon Tea at the Esplanade Hotel Newquay

*We were provided with this experience for the purpose of this post however all opinions are my own.

During our week away in Cornwall we visited the Esplanade Hotel in Newquay for afternoon tea. We stayed at the hotel a few years ago and couldn’t wait to go back – and afternoon tea is always such a treat.

The Esplanade Hotel

The Esplanade Hotel is in a fantastic position in Newquay, a short walk from the town and with fantastic coastal views across Fistral Beach. It’s been done up over recent years and has a really relaxed, beachy feel and is super family friendly. You can read our original review here.

The Esplanade Hotel serves afternoon tea from 12pm to 4pm in the hotel’s Cove Restaurant. It’s a lovely setting, with ambient lighting and views across the bay.

Unlike many hotels, the Esplanade Hotel offer a dedicated children’s afternoon tea menu which would be a fantastic treat for any child and makes afternoon tea something the whole family can really enjoy.

We have afternoon tea quite a lot – it’s one of our favourite pastimes – and usually the restaurant will squeeze everything on to one cake stand. That doesn’t happen at the Esplanade Hotel. Everyone gets their own three tier cake stand full of sandwiches, scones and sweet treats served alongside hot drinks, water and juice.

The children couldn’t wait to tuck into their afternoon tea. It starter with three finger sandwiches – ham, cheese and peanut butter – followed by a plain scone with clotted cream and jam.

I always forget how filling afternoon tea is and so the children’s afternoon tea was the perfect size even with LP and Little Man being 9 and 11. They finished with rocky road and two mini doughnuts served with a caramel sauce.

The children also had the most amazing hot chocolates with their afternoon tea – declaring them the best hot chocolate in Cornwall! They were also offered fruit teas or juice but were happy with hot chocolate and we had water for the table too.

The Traditional Afternoon Tea menu at the Esplanade Hotel

Dave and I had the traditional afternoon tea which was served with our choice of tea – both of us just went for English Breakfast as we’re really not that adventurous when it comes to tea! We loved having a whole pot of tea each and it went well with our afternoon tea.

We started with delicious finger sandwiches that included ham and cheese, smoked salmon and cream cheese and ham and chutney fillings. There was also a scotch egg that felt like such a treat! It was lovely.

We then had one plain and one fruit scone served with jam and clotted cream and we both needed a break after that as it was so tasty but so filling too!

We finish with a plate of sweet treats – a slice of lemon tart, chocolate brownie and a strawberry cheesecake surrounded by a honeycomb crumb. They were all wonderful treats and the perfect way to finish our afternoon tea spread.

We loved our afternoon tea experience at the Esplanade Hotel. It’s a beautiful setting with a delicious afternoon tea spread that the whole family loved.
