When we were on holiday in Wiltshire over Easter we spent a day at Stonehenge and, on the way home, we popped to Salisbury for a couple of hours to wander around and visit Salisbury Cathedral.

Where is Salisbury Cathedral?

Salisbury Cathedral is in the heart of Salisbury, in a really historic part of the town, surrounded by so much history. When we visited there was so much to look at, even just the walk from where we parked the car to the cathedral was full of wow moments!

What is Salisbury Cathedral?

Salisbury Cathedral is one of the leading examples of early English gothic architecture. It dates all the way back to 1220 and has the tallest Cathedral spire in England.

When we visited we spent time exploring the whole cathedral. We started at the cloisters, admiring the lawns and outside spaces as well as the incredible architecture. We thought Salisbury Cathedral may have featured in Harry Potter – as it’s very reminiscent of Hogwarts – but we were mistaken, and couldn’t tick off another of the Harry Potter filming locations!

We then went inside and explored the main cathedral building. The ceilings are vast and there’s so much to look at – with so many columns, plaques on the walls, statues and stained glass windows. Its an incredible building.

One of our favourite parts was the highly reflective font, giving amazing reflections of the vaulted ceilings above. It was unlike anything we have seen before, like a piece of art, and we could have spent ages just looking into it and taking a moment.

There was an exhibition on when we visited of photos of all the other UK cathedrals and also a fantastic model of Salisbury Cathedral with so many intricate details. It felt like we found something new to look at around every corner.

The Magna Carta at Salisbury Cathedral

Our last port of call at Salisbury Cathedral was to see the Magna Carta in Chapter House. You can’t take photos of the actual Magna Carta but, it’s housed in a room with exhibits explaining about the history of the Magna Carta and where the other copies can be found.

It was really interesting and felt like we were up close to such an incredible piece of history. The Magna Carta at Salisbury Cathedral is the best-preserved of the four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta and dates back to the signing of the Magna Carta at Runnymede in 1215.

There is so much to see at Salisbury Cathedral and it’s well worth taking the time ti explore. It’s also home to the Salisbury Clock, what is thought to be the oldest working model clock in the world. There’s just so much to see at Salisbury Cathedral, a real piece of history and everything is just beautifully preserved. We’re so glad we visited.
