It’s no secret that we love a crumble. It’s our family’s favourite dessert and something that we would happily have after every Sunday lunch – and on every other day too!

Over the years we have made plenty of apple crumbles, gooseberry crumbles and blackberry crumbles but something I have recently started putting in the crumbles we make at home is cherries.

Tart cherries have such a great flavour and work so well. Our latest creation is a cherry apple crumble that I couldn’t wait to share. It’s absolutely delicious and a great option for a family dessert.

What is a crumble?

A crumble is a hearty, warming dessert most commonly made over the cooler months but can be enjoyed throughout the year. Also known as a crisp or cobbler, it’s basically a layer of fruit filling topped with a crumble mixture of butter, flour and sugar.

What do you need to make this cherry apple cobbler recipe?

For this old fashioned apple and cherry crumble recipe you can use any apples you have to hand, they don’t need to be cooking apples and I tend to use whatever apples we have in the fruit bowl at the time. Granny Smith apples are always a favourite choice if we have them.

You can also use fresh or frozen cherries for this apple and cherry cobbler recipe and an apple cherry crisp with frozen cherries works just as well as fresh cherries. Frozen cherries defrost quickly during the cooking process and taste great too – sweet but tart and oh so juicy too.

This sweet cherry apple crisp is a great alternative to a dessert pie although you can use any pie filling in a crumble. So think of this as apple cherry pie but in crumble format!

Like with all crumbles, this apple cherry crisp can be served as it is or with cream, ice cream or custard. Custard will always be my favourite accompaniment for a crumble, especially an easy apple and cherry crumble!
