Shaun the Sheep Find the Flock Trail at Winkworth Arboretum

Just after Christmas we went to Winkworth Arboretum, one of our favourite local National Trust sites, for their Shaun the Sheep Find the Flock trail. Running until 19th January, it’s a great way to get outside and blow the cobwebs away. We did the Snowman trail a couple of years ago and loved it so couldn’t wait for this!

What is Winkworth Arboretum?

Winkworth Arboretum is a fully outdoor National Trust site near Godalming in Surrey. It has a lake in the middle, complete with a boat house, and covers various different levels across the site, letting you see the arboretum from so many different perspectives.

As Winkworth Arboretum doesn’t have a house to explore, we often find it quieter than other National Trust sites. Although there isn’t a house at Winkworth Arboretum, there is a fantastic play area that the children always love to spend time at – although we didn’t visit it this time, it was far too foggy and cold for playing!

A new visitor centre is being built at the moment and so there’s a little disruption but nothing that gets in the way of enjoying your day. We’re looking forward to the centre opening next year.

Unlike other National trust trails, the Shaun the Sheep Find the Flock trail doesn’t cost anything – but having said that, there isn’t a prize at the end either. It’s a trail you do purely for the enjoyment. And it really did bring us joy.

The Shaun the Sheep Find the Flock trail takes you in a rough loop around the more accessible routes of Winkworth Arboretum. The trail features twelve different Shaun the Sheep sculptures, all decorated beautifully, with inspiration taken from Christmas and the English landscape.

We picked up a trail map when we arrived at Winkworth Arboretum and there were signs pointing us in the right direction all around the site. Although the trail doesn’t take you all around the whole of Winkworth Arboretum, you can leave the trail to explore at any point before getting back on track.

We loved spotting Shaun up ahead, and guessing what he was decorated as before getting up close, admiring the artwork and reading about the sculpture and the artist. The trail is so interesting and every single Shaun is beautifully decorated.

Plus, there are fun things to do around the trail too – from jigsaws to games. So much thought has gone into the Shaun the Sheep trail and I’m really glad we had the chance to visit.
