When we were planning our trip to Rome with the children we wanted to make everything run as smoothly as possible and to be as easy for the children as we could manage. We knew that we’d have to organise a way of getting from Rome airport to central Rome and looked at every option available – from pre-booking a transfer to a taxi and finally the Leonardo Express.

A Family Visit to Castel Sant’Angelo Rome
A structure that dominates the banks of the Tiber in Rome is Castel Sant’Angelo, which is in a prominent place right outside the Vatican City and it’s a must see attraction when travelling with children to Rome. There is so much Castel Sant’Angelo history, it was initially commissioned by a Roman Emperor Hadrian and there has been a structure of sorts on the site since 134 AD. It has been evolving ever since and was even used by the Pope as a castle and a fortress. There are secret tunnels that directly connect The Vatican City and Castel Sant’Angelo. It was used by the Papal state as a prison and executions were often carried out in the courtyard. Dave and I visited years ago, before children, and were keen to see if it had changed and what the children would think of it on our recent trip to Rome.
Things to do in Rome with Kids
Having just got back from a family trip to Rome I thought it would be good to put together a few ideas of family friendly things to do in Rome with kids if you’re thinking about visiting at any point.

We absolutely loved visiting Rome, Italy with the children and it’s such a different experience to going as a couple – which we did quite a few years before. But, travelling anywhere with children as a family vacation requires a lot more planning than travelling without them so I thought it might help to put together my tips for a family friendly break in Rome with kids.
A Week in Rome {The Ordinary Moments}
Welcome back to another week of the Ordinary Moments. If you haven’t joined in before this is a weekly linky that launches every Sunday morning and is open until midnight on the following Saturday. It’s a linky that celebrates any ordinary moments in your life – or the not so ordinary some weeks too. Basically – anything goes. I’ll be sharing and commenting on the posts that are linked up during the week and there’s a badge at the bottom of the post if you’d like to add it to yours too.
A Family Stay at the Hotel California Rome
When we were planning our trip to Rome as a family we spent quite a lot of time investigating hotels. I wanted the hotel to be perfect for us as a family, one that ticked all the boxes. It had to have a seperate sleeping area for the children, be within walking distance of Rome’s main sights and have breakfast included. You would not believe how hard these few requirements were to meet – but then we found Hotel California and booked it immediately.
Planning a Rome City Break with Kids
Before having kids we loved city breaks. Dave and I went to Rome for his birthday about eleven years ago. It was whilst we were planning our wedding and a bit of a celebration of actually paying for our wedding – a final treat before the big day six months later.
Reminiscing: Rome
Quite a few years ago, after Dave and I got engaged but before we got married, we went to Rome. It was for four days, three nights and it was a gift to ourselves for having paid for our wedding and having not had a holiday in a couple of years it was the best treat we could have had.
