This is the perfect time of year for a mug cake – full on hibernation mode is activated! For us, they’re the perfect accompaniment to a movie in the evening or after school treat. The children love them.

Our latest creation is a banana chocolate chip mug cake that we’ve mainly been making to use up leftover bananas. Chocolate chip banana mug cakes are super easy to make, with a recipe that can be varied easily, and are a sweet treat just when you need it. Great for anyone with a sweet tooth!

How do you make a banana and chocolate chip mug cake?

For our banana chocolate chip mug cakes we use a ripe banana – the riper the better – along with self raising flour, light brown sugar and some mini chocolate chips. You can also use other types of sugar if you wanted and plain flour also works with a teaspoon baking powder added.

This banana chocolate mug cake recipe makes two mug cakes although we often make a single serving and put the rest of the mix in the fridge for another day. It’s a fantastic alternative to banana bread and we’ve been known to add a dollop of peanut butter or drizzle of maple syrup too – delicious!

Banana Chocolate Chip Mug Cake Recipe

So here’s our Chocolate Banana Mug Cake Recipe:

Makes two mug cakes

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana
  • 8 tbsp self raising flour
  • 4 tbsp light brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp chocolate chips or chocolate chunks
  • 1 egg

Recipe

  • Mash the banana and add the rest of the ingredients to it
  • Beat well with a fork
  • Divide the mixture evenly between two mugs
  • Sprinkle with a few more chocolate chips
  • Microwave on full power for 90 seconds
  • Leave to cool slightly before eating – enjoy!
