We were recently sent some tubes of Primula Kids Mild Squeezy Cheese and we’ve had great fun using it for all the recipes we can think of. Squeezy Cheese sandwiches and cheese squeezed onto ritz crackers are the everyday options but one clear favourite was my Squeezy Cheese and Ham Primula Pasta.
Both children cleared their plates and I had it too. This will be a regular theme in our house, especially when Dave’s working as it’s a quick and easy dinner for the kids and I.
Is Primula Cheese healthy?
Primula Cheese spread is quite a low fat food option to include in cooking and is great if you’re following a Weight Watchers or Slimming World plan. We use it a lot as it is great for family meals and a lovely part of a healthy balanced diet.
If you’re vegetarian you could add tomatoes or other vegetables instead of the ham to this cheesy pasta dish or if you eat meat but want a bit of variety you could make a Primula prawn pasta or a chicken pasta instead. You could even just stir in some garlic powder to make a bowl of cheesy garlic pasta goodness!
Also, you can use bacon instead of ham in this recipe. Just brown it off in a frying pan or under the grill and leave to cool a little before adding to the mix. This is a great meal for making with whatever you have in the fridge at the time and it can be served simply with garlic bread or on it’s own.
For this recipe we use any pasta shapes we have to hand but you could use macaroni for a simple macaroni cheese or even spaghetti for a bit of a carbonara style dish. It’s such a versatile dish and often the only recipe we need for the children!
Can you use an alternative to Primula Cheese in this recipe?
If you don’t have any Primula products you can always use other soft cheese or creamy cheese spreads like Laughing Cow, Dairylea or Cathedral City Spreadable but Primula easy squeeze cheese is our favourite light cheese spread for this recipe. There really is no Primula Cheese substitute for us but you can still make a really nice cheese and ham pasta with other soft cheeses.
For more variety you could try making this into a pasta bake. Preheat oven to 200C, cook as per the instructions below, sprinkle with cheese and bake in an oven proof dish for 25 minutes until bubbling, perfectly golden brown and delicious!
What equipment do you need for this Primula pasta recipe?
You don’t need any special equipment at all and can just use things you have in the kitchen already. But, if it helps, here are the things we use:
- Large saucepan
- Colander – or a special pasta pan which is life changing!
- Wooden spoon
- Grater
- Scales
This recipe could not be simpler and it’s a really tasty one that the children love and adults will happily eat too!

Hi,
I have some Italian students so am eager to try this but would really like to do it in their lunch boxes.
Have you tried it as a cold option?
Yes – it’s lovely cold as well. We make it hot and then just leave it to cool before putting it in lunch boxes.
