Enjoying Afternoon Tea at Great Fosters

I recently spent a lovely Friday afternoon at Great Fosters, having afternoon tea with my closest friend. It couldn’t have been a nicer way to finish a busy week and it was one of the nicest afternoon tea experiences I have had so I thought I’d write about it in case you wanted to have a lovely, indulgent afternoon tea experience too.

What is Great Fosters?

Great Fosters is a luxury 5 star hotel and part of The Alexander Hotel Collection. It’s near Windsor in Egham, Surrey, and is home to a Michelin starred restaurant, beautiful grounds and the Utopia Retreat. It’s one of the most popular wedding venues in the area and as soon as you drive through the gates you can see why. It’s beautiful.

The Great Fosters estate is of Tudor heritage and steeped in royal history – not surprising for such an old building located so close to Windsor! It’s set in 50 acres of gardens and grounds that include listed parterres, a fountain, the Saxon moat, a Japanese bridge and even a sundial gifted by Sir Francis Drake.

The actual hotel is made up of 56 individually designed rooms and suites, including the famous Historic Named Suites. Plus, there are two dining options – the 2-AA rosette Estate Grill restaurant that offers delicious informal dining, and The Tudor Pass for a Michelin-starred experience.

Afternoon Tea at Great Fosters is served in the historic Anne Boleyn drawing room, Garden Room and Cocktail Bar and in the summer months on the terrace overlooking the parterres. As we booked afternoon tea in February we were seated in the Anne Boleyn drawing room which was beautiful.

The setting couldn’t have been nicer – there were real fires, flowers on the tables and crockery that matched the sofas and chairs perfectly. Plus, the staff we spoke to from arrival to being seated were absolutely lovely.

Our afternoon tea came with bottled water and an optional champagne afternoon tea upgrade – which we declined – plus, our choice of tea or coffee. We had to wait a while for our afternoon tea to be served – I think as we had booked at the very start of the tea service at 12pm. But, the drawing room was a lovely place to relax and catch up. We didn’t mind the wait.

Our afternoon tea started with a selection of four dainty finger sandwiches – Coronation Chicken, Smoked Salmon, Dill Mayonnaise Cucumber, Cream Cheese & Cracked Black Pepper Egg Mayonnaise & Mustard Cress.

Next we had scones and they were wonderful! Warm, freshly baked fruit and plain scones served with clotted cream and strawberry jam. They were so filling and absolutely delicious.

The afternoon tea finished with a Mont Blanc Tart, White Chocolate and Pineapple Choux, Dark Chocolate and Passion Fruit Dome and a Apple & Crรจme Fraiche Mousse. These were all absolutely delicious – and we were given a little box to put any we couldn’t quite manage in to take home with us.

We loved our Great Fosters Egham afternoon tea experience and think it would be lovely for a birthday, anniversary or just a lovely treat. Plus, they have special offers and different menus for special occasions like Mothering Sunday too.
