Spa breaks are some of my favourite things and I always like to find somewhere new to relax with a good friend. Last month Lauren and I treated ourselves to a break at Old Thorns Hotel & Resort in Liphook Hampshire and it proved to be just the break we needed.

What is Old Thorns?
Old Thorns is a hotel and golf resort. We weren’t prepared for how big the hotel was, it’s far bigger than anywhere we have stayed in the UK previously – aside from maybe Potters Resorts!
The hotel is a popular wedding and special occasion venue and can cater to weddings with thousands of people. It’s a vast site which you find out as soon as you drive into the car park! But, it’s based in the Hampshire countryside, surrounded by woodlands, it’s lovely and quiet despite the hotel size.
Staying at Old Thorns
We booked a Prosecco stay and dine package at Old Thorns and our room was available when we arrived at 2pm. We did get a little lost trying to locate our room but when we found it we were pleased, it was basic but comfortable and perfect for our needs.
We had a double room with a large bathroom that had tea and coffee making facilities, wifi, complimentary toiletries, towels and plenty of storage space. We did have a slight moan about the lack of hand towels in the bathroom – all the towels were huge bath sheets but aside from that the room was fine.
The spa at Old Thorns
After unpacking we went straight to the pool to make the use of the hotel’s spa and leisure facilities. We had to leave our room keycard as a deposit for a padlock for the lockers and were given towels to use in the pool.
The changing rooms were fine, with plenty of lockers, hairdryers and a swimming costume spinner to try your costume out. You have to pay to have a robe and slippers for the day so we didn’t bother and just used our towel and took our own flip flops with us.
Old Thorns has a good size swimming pool with a big jacuzzi at one end. There are loungers along one size but nowhere near enough given the size of the hotel.
There’s also a wellness suite with sauna, steam room, ice area, heated loungers, foot spas and jacuzzi but quite a lot wasn’t working which was disappointing. One heated lounger wasn’t working, the jacuzzi wasn’t hot or bubbly and the foot spas seemed to be out of action. But, we made the most of the sauna, steam room, pool and jacuzzi. It was still a lovely way to relax.
After a few hours of relaxing we went back to our room to get ready for dinner. The bathroom facilities in our room were great – the shower was so hot and the complimentary toiletries were great quality and smelt lovely.
Eating at Old Thorns
When we were ready we went down to the Sports Bar where we had a complimentary pre-dinner drink each. The drinks were lovely but the bar was so loud, so bright and not what we were expecting in the evening. It lacked any kind of ambience.
As part of our package we had a two course dinner included in the Kings Restaurant. However, as we visited on a Sunday the dinner was a carvery – plus a starter or dessert. The carvery was lovely, one of the best we have ever had but there didn’t seem to be any vegetarian or vegan options on the menu – just the three meat carvery.
The carvery had so much included – sausages, Yorkshire puddings, so many different vegetables, roast potatoes, new potatoes, dauphinois potatoes… it was incredible. Such a great hotel meal.
We then both had desserts – an apple blackberry crumble and a chocolate torte. Both were delicious but utterly beat us after the carvery!
We slept really well at Old Thorns but did find the doors to other rooms made a lot of noise when closing. But, the bed and bedding were really comfortable and the temperature in the room was just right as well.
Breakfast at Old Thorns
In the morning we didn’t have to book a table for breakfast and were able to just turn up, any time between 6:30am and 10am. We went down at about 9am and it wasn’t took busy at all, we were seated swiftly and pointed in the direction of the buffet.
The whole breakfast at Old Thorns is self service, with tea, coffee and juices readily available as well as so much to eat. There’s a variety of bread products, cold meats and cheeses, fruit, pastries and a vast spread of cooked options.
If the buffet isn’t to your taste, there is also a small menu of items that can be cooked to order at an additional cost with things like smoked salmon and scrambled eggs or eggs benedict.
The breakfast was lovely and really set us up for the day. It was a fantastic spread and I was just disappointed that there was no fried bread – but they had pretty much everything else. It was delicious.
After checking out of the hotel we went for a walk through the woodland which was lovely. The hotel is in such a great setting and it’s a great place for a break away. Our only real negative was how busy the pool was at times and generally how busy the whole hotel is. The hotel has guest numbers expected from such a large hotel.
That said, our break was great value – including dinner, drinks, bed, breakfast and leisure access from check in until check out for just ยฃ150 for the two of us, ยฃ75 each.
