We needed somewhere to stop off on a long drive to Leicester and found Wrest Park, an English Heritage site that was perfectly situated for our needs. So we planned to spend a couple of hours there to break up our journey and have a picnic.

What is Wrest Park?

Wrest Park is an 18th-century mansion standing in 90 acres of magical gardens situated in Silsoe, Bedfordshire. It’s a place full of character with an ornate marble fountain, an 18th century Bowling Green House and a Chinese Bridge and Temple.

Visiting Wrest Park

Wrest Park is easily accessible from the local area and has plenty of parking on site. As English Heritage members we had free admission and parking and we saw so many people visiting purely to walk their dogs – it’s a beautiful place for a dog walk.

As soon as we started exploring we loved Wrest Park. The visit starts and ends at the main visitor centre which is home to a fantastic cafe – with a beautiful wooden play area right outside and plenty of picnic tables too.

We walked through the formal gardens, admiring the gardening that was being done during our visit. It was nice to see people clearing weeds and trimming bushes, showing that Wrest Park is constantly maintained, keeping it always looking its best.

We walked to the fountain, explored the bowling green house and walked along the Long Water. Wrest Park has a few different walks available of varying lengths but as we weren’t visiting for very long we just did our own thing, a vague loop of the grounds that we could see from the mansion house.

We didn’t spend very long at Wrest Park, and felt like we only really scratched the surface, but we had such a nice time and know that we’ll visit again in the future. We can’t wait to explore more of what Wrest Park has to offer.
