When we travelled to Washington DC in October half term, after a few days in New York, we spent quite a lot of time looking for a hotel. We wanted somewhere within walking distance to attractions, with car parking nearby in case we wanted to hire a car and somewhere comfortable for our family trip. But, we also needed it to be affordable. In the end we chose the Holiday Inn Washington Capitol – Natl Mall.
Where is Holiday Inn Washington Capitol National Mall by IHG?
The Holiday Inn Washington Capitol hotel couldn’t be better located. It’s just a short walk from the National Mall, the Spy Museum and The Wharf, making it a fantastic base for sightseeing.
Plus, the hotel has a car park on site – although often cheaper to book through third party services – and a McDonalds right next door. There isn’t much more you could want for a family trip!
Staying at Holiday Inn Washington Capitol hotel
We arrived in Washington DC by train at Union Station and it was about a twenty minute walk to the hotel – slightly longer as we stopped to see the sights on our way! When we arrived the staff were really friendly and welcoming, pointing us in the direction of our room and letting us know breakfast times for the morning.
The rooms at Holiday Inn Washington Capitol hotel
For our trip we were staying in a Two Double Bed Room which was literally a room with two double beds in it. It was a good size and had plenty of storage space as well as a fridge and tea and coffee making facilities.

The bathroom was a good size and there were plenty of towels and complimentary toiletries. It was perfect for our needs although a little dated, like the rest of the room, but this didn’t effect our stay.

We found the room to be really comfortable, nice and dark and quiet overnight and with comfortable beds and bedding. However, it is very near a train line, meaning we did disturbed by the horns and bells of trains going by early in the morning. This obviously can’t be helped and was something we got used to after the first night.

Breakfast at Holiday Inn Washington Capitol hotel
Our room included breakfast for two people, and kids eat free up until age eleven – which proved to be quite an odd set up. I’m unsure why breakfast wasn’t free for everyone staying.

The breakfast was buffet style and had such a lot of choice. There were all the usual cooked options, pancakes, waffles, pastries – even doughnuts! Plus plenty of fresh fruit and cereals. It was a great way to start the day.

The hotel also had an evening restaurant, a grab and go counter and a full service Starbucks on site but we didn’t make use of them during our trip.
There was pool on the rooftop of the hotel – although it was closed for the season when we visited – and a fitness centre and self service laundry room on site, which we didn’t use.
We loved our stay at the Holiday Inn Washington Capitol Hotel. It was just a short walk from all the sights and we parked easily at the hotel when we rented a car later in our trip. When we had an issue with our bathroom it was fixed really quickly – along with our request to turn the air con off as it was quite noisy and we didn’t need it.
We would happily stay at the Holiday Inn Washington Capitol Hotel again. As tourists, on our first trip to Washington DC, it couldn’t have been a better, budget friendly place to stay as a family.
