Titanic The Artifact Exhibition Orlando Review
One thing I really wanted to do when we were in Florida was go to Titanic The Artifact Exhibition. It had been around when we last visited Florida but the children were much younger so we didn’t visit. This time though we made the trip – and really enjoyed it.
What is the Titanic Artifact Exhibition?
Titanic The Artifact Exhibition is an exhibition of real artifacts from the Titanic as well as a lot of mockups and reproductions of things that would have been on board. There are over 300 different artifacts on show and it’s a real educational experience.
We visited just as the heavens opened and the Titanic Exhibition proved to be a great place to get out of the rain! We bought our Artifact Exhibition tickets and were given a small into to the exhibition, being told that each of the Titanic exhibits would have a sign next to it. Ones that had the Titanic crest on them were real artifacts that had been brought up from the wreckage of the Titanic.
We were also given a boarding card with passenger details on it. Each card detailed a real passenger of the Titanic and when you got to the end of the exhibition you could find out what happened to them. It was really eye opening and quite a sobering experience.
Guided tours of the Titanic Artifacts Exhibition
There are guided tours available at an additional cost and at selected times through the week. These are thematic guided tours where an artifact specialist lead groups of up to 25 people through the exhibition providing a personalised experience. This costs an additional $5 per person on top of ticket prices.
At the moment there are a few different tours available – The Ship of Dreams Guided Tour, Heroes of Titanic Guided Tour, Tales from Titanic Guided Tour and the Titanic Adventure for Kids Guided Tour which looks fantastic but we chose to just work around the exhibition in our own time.
Exploring Titanic The Artifact Exhibition
We started the exhibition watching a short film about the Titanic and seeing a scale model before moving in to the main exhibition. The first rooms were about the making of the Titanic in Belfast and it travelling to Southampton before setting sail for New York.
We then set foot on board the Titanic, walking through an outer door and into what felt like a corridor on the ship. This was our first experience seeing artifacts from inside the ship and there was so much to see. From furniture and crockery to wine bottles and luggage.
Every display case had a story or two to tell and we gradually heard more about the passengers on board. What we hadn’t known before was that many people ended up on Titanic because of a coal strike. They should have been on a different ship but were moved to Titanic because of the lack of coal. To think that many shouldn’t have even been on the ship. It was definitely an emotional experience reading about the passengers and, in many cases, their journey towards what they hoped would be a brighter future.
The exhibition took us through a recreation of one of the on board restaurants before we found ourselves below deck, seeing all the luggage and cargo in the hold – there were even cars on board. Plus we got to see the boiler rooms that kept the ship moving forward.
The exhibition then took us out on deck where we could see the sea moving around the ship and it felt really cold too. It was a great reconstruction of how it would have been the night the Titanic hit the iceberg. We soon found out why it was so cold too – as there was a reconstruction of an iceberg when we went back inside.
The exhibition finished with pieces of the Titanic hull that had been brought up from the wreckage – and one piece you could even touch. The children loved this part, being able to touch a real piece of history, although it was quite emotional too – especially as we also got to see all the names of the passengers and crew who had died.
Photographs at the Titanic Museum Orlando
You are free to take photographs throughout Titanic The Artifact Exhibition aside from in the main grand staircase room. This is mainly because this is a paid photo opportunity with a staff member waiting to take a photo of you that can be purchased at the end. There’s also another green screen photo experience right at the start of the exhibition if you want to purchase even more photos.
The Titanic Dinner Gala
The exhibition also hosts the Titanic First Class Dinner Gala where you get to enjoy a gala dinner on board the Titanic. You get to board the Ship of Dreams and be a guest at one of the most famous dinner parties on board Titanic, joining Captain Smith, Margaret “Molly” Brown and other first-class passengers for a night to remember.
The Titanic The Artifact Exhibition Dinner Gala Orlando includes a Captain’s cocktail party, a tour of the Orlando Titanic The Artifact Exhibition, a first-class dinner and reenactments of the night of April 14, 1912. It’s available for anyone over seven years of age and offers what sounds like a once in a lifetime experience.
Is the Titanic exhibition worth seeing?
We enjoyed the Titanic Museum in Orlando and are really glad we went. It was something different, educational and something we felt was really important to see. Plus, it’s a great way to get out of wet weather or enjoy air conditioning for a couple of hours!
