For this loaf cake recipe we use typical cake ingredients – butter or margarine, sugar, flour, eggs and unsweetened cocoa powder and Nutella chocolate hazelnut spread for the added flavour and texture.

We use self raising flour for this Nutella cake recipe but if you prefer you can use plain flour or all purpose flour and a teaspoon baking powder or baking soda. We just use self raising flour for ease. We also use caster sugar but granulated sugar, golden caster sugar or even light brown sugar work really well. You can also add a little vanilla extract to this recipe but I like to focus on the chocolate hazelnut flavours.

You can serve this cake cooled, straight from the oven but we like to finish it with a homemade creamy Nutella buttercream icing made simply with unsalted butter, icing sugar, Nutella and a splash of milk. We like to halve the cake to add a layer of Nutella frosting in the middle, creating a Nutella layer cake that is absolutely delicious.
