Cherry Bakewell is one of my favourite flavours and I love making loaf cakes – they’re easy to bake and slice really nicely too! So, it felt only right to make a loaf Bakewell cake – and it turned out great!

This Bakewell Cake is completely different to Cherry Bakewell Tarts but still has the same flavours. It doesn’t have a layer of cherry jam or raspberry jam in a shortcrust pastry case, covered in a light almond frangipane bake and topped with flaked almonds.

Instead, it’s a delicious, light bake full of cherry and almond, giving the taste of a Bakewell Tart in the form of a fantastic loaf cake perfect for any occasion. We love this as a simple, rustic, birthday cake alternative.

What do you need to make a Cherry Bakewell cake?

For this Bakewell loaf cake we use typical cake ingredients along with greek yogurt to make the cake lovely and moist plus ground almonds, almond extract, flaked almonds and glacé cherries to give that traditional Bakewell flavour as well as a little extra texture.

Although we use glace cherries in this bake you could also use maraschino cherries, fresh cherries or frozen cherries too. Any sweet cherries would work well and would create a really lovely, sweet cherry cake.

This delicious cherry and almond cake recipe doesn’t have any chocolate in it. It’s drizzled with simple icing to finish it off but, if a cake isn’t complete for you without chocolate you could always drizzle it with melted milk chocolate or white chocolate if you wanted to instead.

Can you vary this lovely cherry sponge cake?

Although this is an absolutely delicious cherry bakewell cake, you could always add frozen or fresh raspberries to the almond sponge instead of the glace cherries to make a Raspberry Bakewell Cake if you wanted. A raspberry almond cake is always a nice idea. Any fruit would work well in this cake and complement the almond flavour – blueberries, blackberries or a nice summer fruits mix.

This ridiculously easy cherry almond loaf cake is a great cake for literally any occasion. It could be sliced for a cake sale, had as part of an afternoon tea spread or just enjoying with a cup of tea in the afternoons. A cherry cake recipe is one that can be made for any reason or no reason at all.

This cake keeps well in an airtight container for a few days however, it never lasts that long in our hour! Bake it, leave it to cool, add the topping, slice and enjoy with a nice cup of tea and a group of friends. Job done.

  1. Ohh! This does sound so good. My family are not a fan of the cherry Bakewell flavour but I am. I might have to give this a try and eat it all myself. hehehe x

    1. We use a 2lb tin. I’m sure you could use a 1lb tin, you would just need to adjust the cooking time although I’m unsure of the exact time needed as I haven’t cooked 1lb ones before.

  2. Hi
