One of the last castles we visited in Wales was Harlech Castle, a beautiful castle situated on a hill, overlooking the world below. It’s a must if you’re in the area! We visited Castle Harlech for free thanks to our English Heritage membership. You can find out more about using English Heritage membership in Wales here.
What is Castell Harlech?
Castle Harlech was the scene of many sieges in its time. Vast towers and rugged walls along with a magnificent setting, make it a glorious castle, even it’s semi-ruined state.
The castle doesn’t really have rooms, but it has walkways to explore, ramparts and staircases. It’s a real maze to explore, and a picture postcard castle that children will love.
A visit to Castle Harlech starts with a video of the castle’s history and then you are ready to cross the floating bridge and enter the castle!
The children were given trails to help keep them engaged and they spent ages looking for different symbols in different areas whilst we read boards and learnt more about the Castle Harlech history.
You can walk all the way around the outside of the castle, as well as all the way around the battlements. There are fantastic views throughout – some of the best that we saw during our time in Wales.
Castle Harlech has a really lovely visitor’s centre, complete with cafe, toilets and a gift shop which is where you start and end your visit.
You can find out more about Castle Harlech over on their website and for reference the address is: Harlech LL46 2YH
