Yesterday we were invited to the press night of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at New Victoria Theatre Woking. The New Victoria Theatre is one of our local theatres and we have seen countless shows there over the years but somehow this was to be our first pantomime – and we could not wait!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is such a classic fairytale and one that we all know and love. I was excited to see how this production would differ from other versions of Snow White we’ve seen in recent years. The most notable different is that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at New Victoria Theatre features The Magnificent Seven, seven fantastic actors all with dwarfism. It was nice to see the Seven Dwarfs being celebrated rather than removed from the story, edited or glazed over.

We loved how true to the original story the New Victoria Theatre production was. It had all the main parts of the fairytale – Snow White, a Prince, seven dwarfs, an evil Queen and a shiny apple! But, it also had everything we’ve come to know and love from a festive panto – so much audience participation, hilarious sketches, ‘oh yes I am, oh no you’re not’ and far too many jokes to count. From the very first scene it was superb!

Through the show we get to know this year’s resident baddie, the evil Queen Dragonella played by Lesley Joseph. Dragonella is the panto villain that everyone loves to hate – except we found it too hard to hate her! Lesley is incredible. She sings, acts and dances her socks off throughout and despite being the bad guy in the story, she is such an icon of the stage and screen that you can’t help but love her.

Rob Rinder played The Man in the Mirror and was just a whirlwind of camp glitz and comedy. Every time he set foot on the stage we knew we were in for a treat – with so much added sparkle! His jokes were risqué and most will go over little ones heads but it’s a completely different story when watching the show with teens – we had more than a few gasps and giggles! They loved it so much.

The story had so many references to Rob Rinder being a Judge and Lesley’s history in Birds of a Feather as well as so much local comedy too. You could tell the show had been written with the cast and location in mind which added so much more to the production. This is so much more than an off the shelf panto. It felt like a real personalised performance, tailored to the people of Woking. It was fantastic.

The whole audience loved watching Muddles the Jester, played by Aaron James. Muddles is such a simple, lovable character and we could not get enough of him. He had such a great rapport with the rest of the cast, creating so many scenes where they literally bounced jokes off each other. He was a joy to watch.

Briana Craig was a fantastic Snow White. She looked the part but also sang and danced beautifully. Her voice is incredible and we all fell in love with her. Her relationship with the dwarfs was wonderful to see and she truly brought the story of Snow White to life. We’ve been lucky enough to see Briana Craig on stage before and she never disappoints. She is such a star.

And this year, Prince William, played by Scott Maurice had such star quality too. His voice was a real highlight of the panto. It carried so well and was so clear throughout. He was fantastic to listen to and we especially loved his duets.

As you can tell, the main cast of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs were astounding. They gave a faultless performance and even the little hiccups you expect with panto were laughed away and smoothed into the story. They are all so great at what they do and all just seemed to be having the time of their lives on stage and it really showed in the performance. It could not have been more fun.

The Magnificent Seven were the children’s favourite part of the show. They were such a team, all bouncing off each other and working together, really embodying everything that we have come to know and love about the Seven Dwarfs. We loved them.

Snow White at New Victoria Theatre is just over two hours long including an interval but we were so immersed in the performance that the time seemed to fly by. I could easily have watched Lesley, Rob and Aaron for another hour. It was top tier comedy and just the sort of festive fun we all need in the run up to Christmas.

If you’re looking for a family outing over the festive season, take the kids to see Snow White at New Victoria Theatre in Woking. The sets are great, the costumes have more sparkle than New Year’s Eve and the songs are familiar yet fresh and new. It’s a performance you’ll want to last forever and it may well be the best panto we have ever seen.
