What is MEL Science?
MEL Science are a fun way for kids to learn real science at home. MEL Science create science kits and digital experiences that help to inspire a love of science in children of all ages.
MEL Science have created over fifty unique digital experiences and over a hundred hands-on science kits that are a great way for parents and children to bond, giving them quality time together whilst working through a science experiment, science lessons and more.
The MEL Science kits
The MEL Science kits are available in three different core subjects – STEM aimed at 5 to 10+ year olds, Physics aimer at 8 to 14+ year olds and Chemistry aimed at 10 to 16+ year olds.
MEL Science sent us one of their STEM kits to review and Little Man couldn’t wait to get started. He really enjoys science but it’s not something he gets to experience at home very often so he immediately loved the idea of MEL Science.
MEL Science Projectile Cannon
The science kit we received was the Projectile Cannon kit. It aims to teach children to assemble their own toy cannon before exploring projectile motion through game play and improving their aim too. Through the project, children will learn what a trajectory is, about angles and velocity and about parabolas in sports.
The projectile kit contained everything Little Man needed to make a cannon as well as a mystery planet map activity poster. The kit comes with a great quality instruction booklet that also includes activities and mini lessons for the child to work through, making the kit so much more than purely a cannon to build.
At eleven, Little Man was able to build the projectile cannon himself but I sat with him to talk through it, make sure he knew what he was doing and make sure he understood what he was learning. For younger children, it would be great to work through the kit with a grown up helping them. Whether you help your child with the kit or, like us, are just there for support and conversation, it is a really lovely opportunity to spend time together.
The only thing Little Man needed help with was putting the angle sticker on the side of the cannon. This wasn’t surprising – he still asks me to put stickers on his Lego sets for him! But he was pleased as punch when the sticker was in place and his canon was complete!
Without any prompting, Little Man knew how to use the cannon and happily fired balls around the room. Having made the cannon all by himself, being able to fire it brought him so much joy. And he was so proud of himself – rightly so!
After playing with the cannon, Little Man was able to use the MEL Stem app to work through the projectile cannon lesson, teaching him more about trajectories and angles whilst he aimed at the target that was included with the kit – and also anything else he felt like aiming at around the house! He soon found out that wherever he fired the cannon, the cats would chase after the ball. This gave hours of entertainment!
Getting more from MEL Science
As well as the physical MEL Science kit, the subscription gives so many digital experiences that children can enjoy whenever they like. The science kit lessons are available in 3D or augmented reality plus there are VR science lessons and so much more. MEL Science really helps to make a child’s screen time educational and fun.
Little Man absolutely loved his first MEL Science experience and I know that he would love to get a MEL Science kit through the door regularly. The kits are educational and engaging and he loved every minute of building his cannon, learning more science and playing science based games with the canon. It was great to see him so inspired!
A MEL Science subscription delivers a hands on science kit each month to your home as well as the additional digital experiences that are available any time. Plus, if your circumstances change, you can pause or cancel – and restart at a later date if you want to.
MEL Science subscriptions would make fantastic gifts or an investment for your child to build on an existing love of science or to inspire a brand new love of all things STEM. I’m sure other children would love a MEL Science kit just as much, or even more, as Little Man loves his projectile cannon!
