School at Home {The Ordinary Moments}
Welcome back to another week of the Ordinary Moments. If you haven’t joined in before this is a weekly linky that launches every Sunday morning and is open until midnight on the following Saturday. It’s a linky that celebrates any ordinary moments in your life – or the not so ordinary some weeks too. Basically – anything goes. I’ll be sharing and commenting on the posts that are linked up during the week and there’s a badge at the bottom of the post if you’d like to add it to yours too.
In last week’s post we were on the cusp of starting school at home, having finished school for an indefinite period. We’re now a week in and it’s definitely been a steep learning curve and a very up and down week.
Our school have set work for the children to do each day. We access it online and start at 9am each morning so the children keep their same school routine. Little Man is usually finished with his work by lunchtime but LP has more to do and so hers takes pretty much the whole school day. Hers also has to be sent back to be marked.
We have a morning break and a lunch break and the children will watch a TV show with their lunch before running out into the garden to play. The one big positive of this week has been the sun shining – we’ve spent so much time in the garden and even dried washing out there. It’s been lovely.
LP has found her work difficult at times. She has so much more than Little Man and it takes longer to complete. She’s found it hard to get into a rhythm with it and there have been tears on multiple occasions from all three of us this week. It’s been a testing time but I’m hoping it will get easier as the weeks go on.
I’ve bulked Little Man’s work out with so many Twinkl printables, dot to dots, word searches and maths mosaics. Plus, we’ve got a pile of science experiments to try over the course of the coming weeks.
I’ve found the week exhausting but the children have quite enjoyed it. It’s been a lot of time together – which is always a bonus – and so much time outside.
I know that I cannot do as good a job at teaching them as the teachers can but it’s more about bridging a gap and making sure they don’t forget everything they’ve learnt so far. If we carry on doing what we’re doing I can look back and say that I did my best and enjoyed bonus time with the children too. Being at home together is definitely not all bad.
If you have an ordinary moment this week, come and link up – I’m looking forward to reading the moments that you share and will comment and share them on Twitter through the course of the week. Thanks so much for taking part.
It has been a rather weird week, one that I am still trying to make sense of myself. I’m hoping that sunshine will make an appearance again at some point this week so I can get my washing done outside too.
Please send your gorgeous girl my love. Tell her to keep smiling, to try her best & not let those tears fall. It breaks my heart that she would have tears over school work. She’s a fabulous bright bunny so I know her best will be more than good enough. I’m sure she’s got her head in books & is reading lots, which is so important.
Sending her a big squeeze too (and you).
From Mrs Dunne x
Couldn’t agree more Donna. I am no teacher but it is nice to have our days filled with productivity and helping them keep on top of what they have already learnt. Our school has also set online work which is sent off to be marked which is quite handy. xx
Gosh you are so organised – we are treating these next two weeks as the easter holidays and having a break if you will. We have however been homeschooling prior to this.
It’s so hard isn’t it, you seem to have a great routine going on though, we have no printer which makes it harder
It has been an odd week. Sounds like you have a good plan in place. I would like it to be a little warmer. x
