The children have had their own tablets since they were about three but we have always made sure that the apps they use are as child friendly as possible but also educational. The latest app we’ve downloaded for the children is Human Heroes Curie on Matter, the most recent in an educational app series featuring the greatest minds in history.

Human Heroes Curie on Matter is all about Marie Curie, the first and only woman to win the Nobel Prize twice. For those of us who weren’t paying too much attention in history at school, Marie Curie was a polish born physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research into radioactivity, eventually developing the theory of radioactivity and even discovering two new elements too! She went on to be the founder of two major medical research centres that are still at the top of their fields today. And Marie Curie even did her bit during the First World War, developing battlefield x-ray units to use on the front lines.

Human Heroes Marie Curie is a theatrical setting where children are able to perform live experiments and learn about the story of Marie Curie’s life and amazing achievements. The app interface is simple and easily picked up, consisting of lots of mini games from crushing items with a pestle and mortar, combining elements and even splitting atoms. Each mini game demonstrates techniques that Marie Curie used over a hundred years ago and they all relate to a STEM subject area and get more challenging as the game progresses.

Little Man has really enjoyed playing the minigames and will now often spout out random pieces of information about elements and the periodic table. Last weekend he proclaimed whilst in the car that “they’re still adding to the table all the time!”

Some of the gameplay did seem a bit repetitive as an adult but it still managed to grab and keep Little Man’s attention as he wants to beat his high score and make new discoveries.

The app includes daily challenges where extra rewards can be won in exchange for beating your score with the in-game currency Synaptocoins – but don’t worry, there are no in-app purchases for real money and the app is fully playable offline too. There are no adverts popping up and it means Little Man can really focus on the game and Dave and I can relax knowing he isn’t going to be spending money or engaging with adverts.

Another part of the app that has kept Little Man captivated is the story of Marie Curie’s life. This is told through beautiful animated sequences and with first class voice acting by BAFTA award-winning Miriam Margolyes, this is probably one of Little Man’s favourite parts of the app.

Little Man has learnt so much about Marie Curie and her work, he cannot wait to show off his knowledge and keeps asking to play the app again and again. There is also a massive database of questions and scientific facts in the Vault of Wisdom where your Synaptocoins can be redeemed for new questions and crazy facts.

We have very much enjoyed Human Heroes Curie on Matter and it has served to reaffirm Little Man’s love of STEM subjects whilst introducing him to more science based facts and processes that we take for granted in everyday life. I’ve installed the app on my phone so that when the children need something to occupy them – when we’re queueing or passing time – they’ll be able to learn more about Marie Curie and have so much fun at the same time.
