Getting Cosy at Home this Autumn

*This is a paid post

Autumn is, without a doubt, my favourite time of the year. It’s a time when you get to slow down a little, snuggle up and focus on spending time with your dearest people. A time when Christmas is just around the corner and when a shiny new year is just moments away.

There is so much we do at this time of year to transition from the warmer summer months across to the cooler, darker autumnal days. It’s something that comes so naturally as the clocks change, the evenings get darker and the weather gets colder.

Ways that we get cosy at home in the autumn

Get the winter clothes out

One of the first signs for us that autumn is here is when we switch our clothes around. When the temperature drops and the days get shorter, we dig out our winter wardrobes and pack away the shorts and vest tops.

Our wardrobes will instead be full of winter knits, leggings and fluffy socks, chunky cardigans and tops perfect for layering. There’ll be a bobble hat and a pair of gloves for those colder days and the winter coat will come back out. It’s my favourite season for dressing, with so many layers that you can add or take off depending on what the day brings.

Pyjamas

When the winter wardrobe makes an appearance I start to live in pyjamas so much more too! I always invest in a new set early in the season, ones that are soft and snuggly, that I can put on in the evening whenever I’m not leaving the house again, and ones that I can wear on those weekend PJ days too like these gorgeous Chelsea Peers Pyjamas.

Pyjamas are one of my favourite things in life and, paired with a pair of fluffy socks and slipper boots, I really am never happier. I make sure the children have lovely, warm pyjamas too so we’re then all ready for the hibernation mode that autumn brings.

Throws

One thing that goes hand in hand with those snuggly autumn days is throws and blankets. I have a blanket on the sofa all year round but this is taken up a level in the autumn. There’ll be throws to grab all around the house, ones that are big, fluffy, warm and perfect for sharing. The children and I love nothing more than snuggling under a blanket and watching a movie together.

Bedding

At this time of the year the brushed cotton bedding comes out – often complete with another throw, blanket or bedspread too! Gloriously soft bedding that is so warm and just waiting for you to climb into at the end of a long day – or stay in just that little bit longer on a dark autumn morning. There really is nothing quite like new bedding at this time of year – and brushed cotton is always a fantastic investment.

Slow cooking

One of the first signs that autumn is here is when our house starts to smell like cooking all the time. The slow cooker is put on in the morning and those glorious smells waft around the house all day. I’ll cook a stew, a sausage casserole, a huge vat of chilli or a hearty soup that will be ready when we are, warming and comforting at the end of a long, grey day. Slow cookers really come into their own at this time of year.

Hot chocolate

We have hot chocolate most days during the autumn and winter. We’ll stock up the cupboards with hot chocolate sachets, keep the marshmallow tub full and make sure we’ve got chocolate sprinkles too, ready for an after school treat, a warming drink after an outdoor adventure or simply a big mug to hug whilst snuggled in front of the TV.

Candles

Nothing says cosy home quite like candles. I buy new ones every autumn and winter and love all the autumnal fragrances they bring into our home. The twinkly lights and gorgeous scents really help to get you in the autumn spirit, embracing this time of year beautifully.

Autumn homeware

I try and resist seasonal homeware but, autumn always sucks me in and I end up being surrounded by cosy cushions, autumnal gnomes, cute signs and so many gorgeous knick knacks that make our home feel that much cosier, really helping us to embrace this time of year.

So now I can say we are in autumn mode. We have just switched the heating on, have covered the house in throws and cushions, have our wardrobes full of the most inviting of knits and comfy pyjamas and are ready to spend the next weeks in slow togetherness, enjoying the beautiful lull that autumn brings with it before the excitement of Christmas around the corner.
