Pinwheels are familiar sight when we put a buffet together at home. They are so easy to make and we’ll usually make cheese and tomato pinwheels as adults and children love them. But, over the festive season we love nothing more than using chutney instead, creating cheese and chutney pinwheels which a lovely sweet but spicy tang to them.

Cheese and Chutney Pinwheels

These simple pastry roll ups are so easy to make. They use just three ingredients and are a pretty foolproof recipe. Even if you love making your own pastry we always have puff pastry sheets in the fridge or freezer purely for this recipe. The children love making pinwheel recipes with me after school or as part of a picnic in the summer too.

These delicious pinwheels are a great snack for the whole family at any time through the festive season and are a must bake for a buffet spread. The kids love them!

Can you vary this chutney and cheese pinwheels recipe?

You could try tweaking them by using cream cheese instead of grated cheese and they last well for a few days in an airtight container. You can also use a sundried tomato relish or even just tomato puree if you’re not a fan of chutney. We’ve made them with mango chutney before and they are delicious!

Although we spread the pastry with chutney and then top with grated cheese, you could create a cheese mixture by combining the chutney and cheese in a large mixing bowl and then spreading the mix on the puff pastry sheet. Whatever works for you.

You could also use caramelised onion relish for cheese and onion puff pastry rolls or dill pickles for cheese and pickle puff pastry swirls. These are easy to vary and whatever cheese puff pastry variety you go for everyone is bound to love them! Our children love it when we made cheese and pickle pinwheels – they’re perfect party food and a great comfort food too.

If you’re looking for other festive options you could try our mincemeat pinwheels and we also make pizza pinwheels through the year and delicious Nutella Pinwheels too. You can see all our Christmas recipes here.
