We recently booked afternoon tea at Kings Arms and Royal Hotel in Godalming, Surrey. It was a school holiday treat and impulse booked it when we saw a great deal on Groupon – plus the hotel offered a great value children’s afternoon tea too.

Where is Kings Arms and Royal Hotel?

The Kings Arms and Royal Hotel is on Godalming High Street, right in the centre of town. They have a small car park on site or there are multiple car parks across Godalming. We parked easily locally and had a lovely wander around town before our afternoon tea booking.

The Kings Arms and Royal Hotel

The Kings Arms and Royal Hotel is steeped in history. There has been a building on the site since the 1300s although the first mention of the Kings Arms and Royal Hotel was in 1639. The Georgian frontage was added in 1753 and the hotel has always been a real fixture in Godalming, offering rooms, food and drinks to locals and people visiting.

When we arrived for our afternoon tea booking we were pointed in the direction of our table and asked what drinks we would like. There wasn’t a drinks menu for the afternoon tea so we had to ask what choices there were – Dave and I had tea with our afternoon tea but we didn’t know what children’s options there were.

In the end the kids had juice and a hot chocolate. The website had said that juice would come in a teapot – which it didn’t – and that the children would get milkshakes but these didn’t materialise and weren’t mentioned. As the children weren’t that bothered we didn’t chase them.

The afternoon tea was brought out after a short wait but we weren’t asked about dietary requirements. We don’t have any – but if you visit and do have allergies or intolerances then it would be good to mention this as soon as you arrive.

The afternoon tea spreads looked beautiful. There was an adult afternoon tea stand for the two of us and a chocolate based one for the children. It didn’t match the children’s afternoon tea menu online – it was more like a chocolate version of the adult afternoon tea but with less sandwiches – but the children were excited to tuck in.

Our adult afternoon tea came with a tier of delicious finger sandwiches – ham, cheese, smoked salmon and egg mayonnaise. They were freshly made, with a variety of breads and were a great way to start the afternoon tea.

We then had a tier of sweet treats with things like cheesecake, macarons, tarts and cakes followed by a scone each with jam and clotted cream. It was a great afternoon tea spread.

The children’s afternoon tea had ham, cheese and egg mayonnaise sandwiches on white bread, a scone each with jam and clotted cream and a tier of delicious sweet treats.

There were freshly made mini chocolate eclairs, freshly made churros, macarons, brownies and a delicious caramel dip. It was lovely but not the children’s afternoon tea they were expecting from the menu on the website which would have included, along with the finger sandwiches, a selection of veg sticks and dip, a snap crackle and brownie pop, a jam doughnut and a fruit and chocolate skewer.

We really enjoyed the afternoon tea. All of the sweet treats, scones and sandwiches were beautifully made, full of flavour and really enjoyable. However, after the afternoon tea was delivered we had no further interaction with the hotel staff. No-one asked if everything was ok, if we wanted more drinks etc. This is something we’re used to when eating out anywhere so it was strange to not have staff pop back to check on us.

The Kings Arms and Royal Hotel afternoon tea was lovely and could have been even better with just a few tweaks on the service front. We got a great deal through Groupon and it made family afternoon tea not just a lovely treat but a great value one too.

Afternoon tea is served at The Kings Arms and Royal Hotel daily but pre-booking is required. You can find out more over on their website and see the latest Groupon deals here. For reference, the hotel address is: 22 High St, Godalming GU7 1EB
