Story Time {The Ordinary Moments}
We love books in our house and read them at every opportunity. LP will even now pick up books and sit and ‘read’ them for ages. She loves books, loves her favourite stories – Gruffalo, Going on a bear hunt, Tabby McTat, Night Monkey Day Monkey – The list is endless!
We always try to have storytime before the children go to bed depending on how tired they are and how bedtime’s going – It’s one of those times of day that can very easily turn from being perfect to being hell in an instant. Bedtime meltdowns are quite common in our house!
When everything is going smoothly we do read a story, or two, or three at bedtime and it’s time that we all love. LP knows most of the stories, points out the characters and loves this bedtime ritual. Little Man is just starting to show an interest in books, staring at the pages, banging the pages when he sees things he likes in the book and trying to turn the pages for me.
Daddy has always been the storyteller in our house – He does the voices so much better than I can and because of his shifts it’s nice for him to have that time with the children on the evenings that he’s at home. I’m usually pottering about, gathering washing, putting things in the loft… Those things that you have to grab a moment to do. But every so often it will work out that Daddy’s home and I’ll do the story – Daddy will need to sort something else or we’ll just do things differently for the evening and it’s nice to enjoy books with the children too and on days when Daddy’s working then I’d do the story anyway!
Storytime has been an ordinary moment of ours since LP started showing an interest in books at around a year old. Nearly two years later and she loves books and has a little brother to share them with. Storytime will continue to be one of the most ordinary moments in our house but one we all love to be a part of.
I love story time. We’ve read to the kids since they were babies, and it’s about the only time all day where they’ll calm down and stay still for a moment, straight after and excitable and chaotic bath-time! A lovely moment x
Aw such a lovely photo. Storytime has always been one of my favourite times of the day. We also do it just before bed, after bath. We started it when Milin was three months old and we tried to set up a good bedtime routine. It has stuck! Tony usually reads the books, he is the one with the better voices here too! I love listening in though. It’s often my time to put away laundry or do something else mundane like tidying up – but I love having an ear on Tony reading to the two of them before bed. Such precious moments. x
It is almost always me who reads the books at bedtime, I have to coerce my partner into it because he’s so tired by that time, but it’s a really precious ordinary moment and one I hope continues for a few years yet 🙂
Aww, you all look lovely snuggled up together. I really want to encourage a love of books with Toby too and we did read to him when he was little but for the moment it’s almost impossible as he just wants to close the book again as soon as you open it! I have no idea why but he only ever seems to want to look at the front covers! We’ll keep trying though and I’m sure we’ll have more success when he gets a bit bigger!
How adorable is that photo Donna! And how big those two are getting! I have only recently {last month or so} started reading to Annabelle and she enjoys it but she doesn’t stay still!! Maybe hopefully she’ll sit as good as your little man there, as after all…I do some pretty darn tooin’ storyteller noises! lol x
