Many people are looking to do what they can to improve their overall health and also help the environment in any ways that they can. A plant based lifestyle can do both of these things and I know that, as a family, we try to make more sustainable, healthier choices where we can in all aspects of our lives.
So I thought I would put together a few ways that you can easily move towards a plant based lifestyle. It can feel impossible to switch to being vegetarian or vegan overnight but, instead, you can just make little changes that work for you and your lifestyle.
Simple Ways to Move Towards a Plant Based Lifestyle
Meat Free Monday
Having one day a week where you don’t eat meat is an easy way of cutting down your meat consumption. A lot of people also do Fish Fridays to switch to eating more fish and less red meat and poultry. You could even try being vegetarian for one day a week if you wanted to and see how it goes. There are so many fantastic vegan and vegetarian meals that the whole family will enjoy.
One way to further embrace a plant-based lifestyle is to purchase organic whole foods in bulk, which not only enhances your pantry’s variety but also supports sustainable living.
Switch to plant-based milk
The main animal product that I use throughout the week is milk and so switching to a plant-based milk would be a simple switch that would make a huge difference. But, are plant-based milks any good? In short – yes, they are! Plant-based milks have come a long way from just having a soya option when I was growing up. Now there’s almond milk, oat milk and soy milk which are all naturally lactose free making them easier to digest. And, you can even bake with plant-based milk! These oat drink blueberry muffins are a fantastic dairy-free starting point.
Use meat substitutes
Meat substitutes are another product that has come so far from the limited range offered when I was a child. Now, instead of just veggie sausages and Quorn mince, you can get chicken that tastes just like chicken without any chicken in it. Meat-free chicken nuggets and such an amazing range of burgers to suit all tastes. Meat substitutes are a great move towards a plant-based diet as you can have all your favourite meals, just with meat alternatives.
Meal plan
A key thing for most people is to know what you’ll be eating in advance. Planning meals for the week means that you can take time to work out what plant-based options you can include, decide on meat-free meals and really give yourself time to organise little moves to a plant-based diet.
There are some things that I’m just not ready to switch right now – like our free range egg delivery or our favourite brand of yogurts. But, I know that in time we’ll be able to move so much of our diet to plant based options, reduce out meat consumption and probably even lower our grocery bills in the process. Plus, this shift could contribute to weight loss and overall healthier habits.
Have you made any moves towards a vegetarian or vegan diet? It would be great to hear your tips for making little steps in that direction.
