Our garden used to need so much maintenance and care throughout the year. Last year we had it overhauled and since then it has been less of a labour of love and instead something that we can keep on top of easily. That all starts with cutting the lawn, which we’ve just done for the first time this year. This may sound familiar to you as this weekend, and today especially, is First Cut Sunday, the day of the year where most people are likely to cut their lawn – weather permitting of course!

This year Flymo sent us a new lawnmower to make sure that our first cut of the season was as painless and stress-free as it possibly could be. I remember last year when it came to mowing the lawn for the first time – digging out the lawnmower, working out where the extension lead was and just not being prepared at all.

But this year we had none of that worry. Instead we unpacked the new lawnmower and put the battery on to charge. The Flymo Mighty-Mo is cordless, making mowing the lawn that much easier. There’s no longer a lead strewn over our shoulders as we walk up and down the lawn and, once charged, the battery life was more than enough to cut our whole lawn in one go.

The lawn is Dave’s job and usually it takes hours but the first cut this year was a simple one. The mower cut the lawn with ease and the most time consuming part was emptying the cut grass after every few lengths but even that didn’t take very long. He thought it was the most enjoyable lawn mowing experience he has had. And that really is saying something – it’s usually such a chore.

Flymo advise that when you cut the lawn for the first time you make sure the grass is dry and that you cut the grass on the highest cutting setting on your lawn mower. You should never cut more than a third of the grass blade off in one go as it can over stress the grass. After that you gradually reduce the cutting height each time you mow the lawn.

Once the lawn was cut we strimmed the edges and it’s now all set for summer. Although the grass does grow incredibly quickly I know we’ll be having our second cut, at a shorter length, before too long.

The first cut of the year is so symbolic. It’s when the warmer weather and time in the garden kicks off. There will be barbecues, paddling pools and just games on the grass. It’s the time when we throw the windows wide open, dry washing on the line and really embrace life outside.

  1. We’ve just moved into a house with grass and my mum has leant me a spare mo. I have to admit I bloody love cutting the grass. That smell is the best. So satisfying too.
