Homemade Strawberry Jam Recipe

Thanks to a Preserving Set Review I am now a little bit addicted to making jam. I am limited to strawberry at the moment though as we have so many growing in our garden – this will definitely turn into something I make every year so I thought I would share my homemade strawberry jam recipe.

Over time we’ll be creating more home made jams, marmalades and chutneys and I’ll make sure I share each and every homemade preserves recipe with you.

We grow strawberries in our garden every year and due to them having shooters, and creating new plants, it means that we have a rolling stock of fresh strawberries throughout the season. Every few days we get a kilo or so of strawberries and the children absolutely love picking them.

Strawberry picking is such a British tradition and it’s lovely that we can participate, and pick our own strawberries as a family, in the comfort of our own back garden. And then make jam with them, of course.

Why should we make Homemade Strawberry Jam?

There are only so many strawberries you can eat and making easy strawberry jam is one way of making sure the strawberries don’t go past their best and get used in a really productive way. We have also made strawberry crumble and strawberry pies in the past which are lovely if you have just a few strawberries to use but otherwise it’s a great idea to make your own jam.

What do we do with the Homemade Strawberry Jam?

A couple of years ago I had no idea how to make strawberry jam but now, each year we make half a dozen jars of classic strawberry jam and give some away as gifts – anything homemade is always a lovely gift and homemade jam is always really well received – it tastes great and we really enjoy the whole canning process. We’ll never need to buy jam again.

Make sure you sterilise the jars before use. You can do this either in the dishwasher or by simply using a water bath of boiling water. You can buy jar labels and lid covers online making the finished jars of jam just the perfect gift. But you can also just savour the jam at home – spreading it on toast or using it to make things like a homemade Bakewell Tart.

So here’s our recipe for strawberry jam:

Instructions

  • Prepare the strawberries by removing the stalks and halving if large.
  • Put half the strawberries in a pan and break up with a potato masher.
  • Add the rest of the strawberries and lemon juice then heat until the fruit has softened – Around 10-15 minutes.
  • Add the jam sugar and bring to the boil, stirring constantly so the sugar breaks up. Heat on a full rolling boil until the setting point has reached (105c) – This usually take around 15 minutes for me.
  • Skim the surface of the mixture or add 10g of butter. When dissolved take the jam from the heat and leave for 5 minutes before putting into sterilised jars.

  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 kg preserving sugar for fruit low in pectin
  • 10 g butter

  2. My dad makes jam every year – I’m fussy though and don’t like jam with bits in so I’ve never tried his strawberry jam! He has made raspberry jam the last few years though and he strains it so no bits, and it’s delicious! Well done you for making your own jam too 🙂

    1. I’m so glad I’ve done it, I’m sure it’ll now be a regular thing – Raspberry is on my list to do next year when our plants start producing enough fruit! x
