Little Man’s First Year of School {The Ordinary Moments}

Welcome back to another week of the Ordinary Moments. If you haven’t joined in before this is a weekly linky that launches every Sunday morning and is open until midnight on the following Saturday. It’s a linky that celebrates any ordinary moments in your life – or the not so ordinary some weeks too. Basically – anything goes. I’ll be sharing and commenting on the posts that are linked up during the week and there’s a badge at the bottom of the post if you’d like to add it to yours too.

Little Man's First Year of School {The Ordinary Moments}

This time last year Little Man had finished nursery for the summer and was looking forward to starting Reception in a few short weeks. We were still going through speech therapy with him and we thought how little he was to be starting school – it had seemed to come round so quickly.

When he started school he was so painfully shy. He wouldn’t talk to the teachers and wouldn’t even say good morning to them when we dropped him off in the morning. Physically he was ready for school but emotionally it took him a while to settle in, to gain confidence and to really show his personality.

For the first half of the year he focused on the things he loved at school – building with anything he could get his hands on and making jigsaws. But, at some point over the last few months he started trying new things, he started experimenting and he started enjoying such a wide range of things at school.

And at some point too his confidence grew massively and he would say good morning as he bounced in and he’d say goodbye as he bounced out again in the afternoon. He has made so many really great friends at school, been to so many birthday parties and learnt so much about the world, space and life.

Our Little Man has grown so much this year in so many ways and it has been a real pleasure to watch. He now talks so confidently, talks constantly and has so many interests. He is a really well rounded little boy who makes us laugh constantly, is so affectionate and caring and who is just a joy to be around.

When he started school I worried that it would spoil our Little Man. That it might take away his sweetness, his compassion and his love of Thomas the Tank. I thought it might make him all about Superheroes, play fighting and Nerf guns. But, he is just the same a year on. He has those same ingrained character traits, he has those same loves and he is just the same – but with a bigger mind, a huge imagination and just so much more confidence.

His first year of school has been great for Little Man and now I’m looking forward to a whole, long summer of adventures with him – and his sister.

  1. He does look so much older now. N has never been a superheroes fan. He’s even refused to go to birthday parties with that theme.

  2. I can’t believe how different he looks after a year! And it’s very nice to hear that not all aspects of his personality have changed. I think it’s so important that they learn to be individuals as well as integrate with others too.

  3. Aw they look so gorgeous in their school uniforms. I’m sure they’re loving their summer break so far x #TheOrdinaryMoments
