Before Christmas I had to travel up to Scotland for a family funeral and booked to stay at The Royal Hotel in Cumnock for two nights whilst I was away. I was looking for somewhere within an easy driving distance of Muirkirk, in East Ayrshire, where our family live, and The Royal Hotel was only about a 15 minute drive away so I booked it as soon as the travel dates were confirmed.

The Royal Hotel Cumnock

The Royal Hotel Cumnock is situated on the one way system in the heart of Cumnock. It couldn’t be easier to find and has free parking on site for guests, although I had to drive around the one way system a couple of times to find the entrance to the car park – it’s round to the left of the building if you’re in the same position!

Once parked I ventured into The Royal Hotel and found myself in the bar. I asked a friendly barman where to go to check in and he showed me the way to the hotel reception – which is actually the restaurant welcome desk. It would be nice if the hotel had a dedicated area to check in so you didn’t have to walk through the restaurant with your luggage but I was happy to just get my room key and settle in for the night.

The staff at The Royal Hotel were lovely and I was pointed in the direction of my room – upstairs on the first floor, with a lift or stairs. I took the stairs and loved how festive everywhere was decorated.

Rooms at The Royal Hotel Cumnock

I found the room easily and was immediately impressed – it was far nicer than I had expected given the last minute booking and affordable price! I had booked a standard double room and was given an accessible one, which wasn’t a problem but did have some noticeable differences to a typical room.

The main bedroom was a great size, with plenty of storage, a good size TV and everything you could need for your stay – an iron and ironing board, hairdryer and extra bedding. There was also a well stocked tea and coffee station that was refilled daily and even included biscuits, such a treat!

There was also a thermostat to heat or cool the room as needed and it was lovely to crank the heating up in the evening on a cold winters day. It’s definitely colder in Scotland than it is down south!

The bathroom was wet room style, with a really big open shower area as well as a toilet, sink and towel radiator. There didn’t seem to be an extractor fan in the bathroom – or if there was it didn’t work very well – so it did get very steamy after a shower, and the shower water was very hot unless on the very coldest setting, but the shower was fantastic and just what I needed after a long drive.

There were plenty of towels, complimentary toiletries and so much space in the bathroom – although the sink was very low due to it being accessible but this really wasn’t a problem.

I found the bed and bedding to be so comfortable and the blinds and curtains kept all the light out, making the room super dark even in the morning. I had worried the room may be noisy due to the bar and restaurant downstairs, as well as the prominent position with roads surrounding the hotel, but I needn’t have worried. I slept really well and was so thankful for such a comfortable room.

Dining at The Royal Hotel Cumnock

The Royal Hotel has a room service menu along with food offered throughout the day in the main restaurant and bar on the ground floor. However, I only sampled the breakfast – which was included with the booking at no extra cost.

Again, I had very few expectations where breakfast was concerned as it had been a last minute booking but I was blown away. On a midweek stay in December, the restaurant wasn’t busy in the mornings and I was able to go down at any time during breakfast hours without booking a time – this was lovely and much appreciated.

The staff were fantastic on both days and I was shown to a little booth where my drinks order was taken and I was given time to peruse the menu. The menu was fairly small but had options I think most people would enjoy – a full Scottish breakfast, a vegetarian version, eggs benedict, eggs royale, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs or pancakes – and the staff were able to tailor dishes to suit specific dietary requirements too.

I had a pot of tea along with the full Scottish breakfast on one morning and eggs benedict on the other. Both were beautifully cooked and arrived swiftly, giving me the perfect start to the day. I was also able to help myself to a basic continental buffet of cereal, toast and juices which was really welcome.

My stay at The Royal Hotel Cumnock was just what I needed. It was warm, comfortable and with staff who were friendly and welcoming. The food was great, parking was easy and I really couldn’t have asked for more. If you need a hotel to stay at in the East Ayrshire area then you could definitely do a lot worse than The Royal Hotel Cumnock.

For reference, although prices do change, my room cost £128 for two nights bed and breakfast in a standard double room. It was great value – especially compared to hotel prices closer to home!
