Visiting Powis Castle and Garden National Trust

On our way to Wales at Easter we needed somewhere to stop to break up the journey and Powis Castle seemed like the perfect place. We always look for National Trust properties to stop off at as we get free entry and free parking as National Trust members.

What is Powis Castle?

Powis Castle is a medieval castle, fortress and grand country house near Welshpool, in Wales. The castle is best known for its formal gardens and interiors, some of the most important and the most magnificent in the country.

When we visited we parked easily in one of the best National trust car parks we have experienced. It was then just a short walk to the visitor centre and a little further on to the entrance to the castle and gardens.

When we visited Powis Castle it was during their Easter event and so we followed the Easter trail around the gardens. The first thing we realised is that Powis Castle is incredibly hilly, and the gardens are stepped, with stairs to different levels as you work your way around them.

We took part in Easter activities throughout the gardens and loved the mix of formal gardens and grassy areas, plus little seating nooks, buildings and archways. The Powis Castle gardens are lovely to explore.

Powis Castle

We went to explore Powis Castle last and were sad that you couldn’t take photos inside. However, we didn’t spend a huge amount of time in the castle and simply meandered from room to room. There were staff on hand to answer any questions and information boards in most rooms.

Powis Castle was well worth exploring inside and the state rooms are beautiful, and set up as if still in constant use. It’s like stepping back in time and we loved the opulence of all the rooms.

Like most National trust sites, Powis Castle has a lovely cafe on site as well as a little gift shop that we all loved browsing.

Before we knew it the time had come to hit the road and so we wandered back to our car. But, Powis Castle is somewhere I would love to visit again as it felt like we’d really only scratched the surface. It is a beautiful National Trust site and fantastic views – and peacocks to make friends with too!

You can find out more about Powis Castle over on their website and for reference the address is: Welshpool SY21 8RF
