Cake Smash!

We have now had a cake smash photoshoot for both LP and Little Man. It is something that I had never heard of before our wonderful newborn photographer friend Ann Wo suggested it to us just before LP’s 1st birthday. We had planned to have a 1st birthday photoshoot for LP and added the cake smash to the plans.

We bought a victoria sponge cake, added lots of cream and strawberries on top and put it in front of a curious one year old LP. She was hesitant, dipped her finger in and tasted the cake a few times but needed a lot of encouragement to really get involved with the cake – We gave her a wooden spoon half way through and she smacked the cake a bit with that and started to enjoy it more. By the end of the photoshoot we were all eating cake and LP was covered!

Zoom forward a couple of years and we have just had Little Man’s photoshoot two weeks after his Birthday. We bought a sweetie cake from the supermarket and when we put it in front of Little Man he couldn’t wait to get stuck in, pulling the sweeties off the top so daintily but soon grabbing the cake up in fistfuls!

Little Man ate a huge amount of the cake but still made a lovely mess too. He smashed it with a wooden spoon, grabbed at it and picked out interesting sweets to eat. He loved it and before we knew it he was crawling away, his way of telling us he was done.

Cake Smash!

Cake smashes may not be everyone’s cup of tea, why smash up a perfectly good cake?! But seeing how babies react to the cake put in front of them is great to watch and you end up with lovely photos to mark their first birthdays too.

Top tips for a cake smash? Don’t have too many distractions for the baby, don’t dress them in anything you don’t want to get ruined, don’t get too involved – stand back and see what happens. Most importantly – have fun!

  1. I love these!!! What a fab thing to do. I hadn’t heard of it either actually until recently and I have a 2 1/2 year old so I am sad he didn’t get to do it. But Missy Moo is doing hers next week. And I am a bit nervous as I hope it all turns out ok but it looks so cute and lovely to have photos of that milestone. I think I will do it every year of them until they are literally old enough to throw the cake at the camera and tell me to stop. hahahah Lovely post. #MMWBH
