Remembering the TV Moments that Connect Us
*This post is a collaboration with TV Licensing (a trademark of the BBC), but all thoughts and experiences are my own.
TV is a huge part of our lives as a family. We spend at least a couple of hours sat together on the sofa each evening, watching our favourite shows or enjoying a movie together at the weekend.
The BBC TV Licensing Moments That Connect Us Campaign has inspired me to think back to the TV moments that have made an impact on my life, and my family’s lives. Those moments that have brought us together and meant something to us. From live sport on TV to big news stories breaking or simply watching cartoons together.
Lionesses in the World Cup Final
As a family we don’t watch a huge amount of sport but we did watch the Women’s World Cup Final last summer. The Lionesses vs Spain, playing with everything they had, getting so close to winning the World Cup.
It was incredible to watch with the children and we were all on the edges of our seats! It felt like that match brought the whole country together and I don’t think we have ever been as collectively proud of a team as we were of them.
The Grand Prix
As a child I used to watch the Grand Prix at the weekend with my Dad whenever it was on the TV. We weren’t really into sport, but my Dad always watched the Grand Prix without fail.
Those Sundays were such quality time for my Dad and I. Sitting together on the sofa, watching the cars whizz around the track and getting to know the drivers as the tournament went on. There wasn’t a huge amount that we did, just my Dad and I. But watching the Grand Prix together was something of ours, that we did together and that we definitely bonded over too.
The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends
One thing I remember vividly as a child is watching The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends on a Sunday evening. It was shown as a series, one episode a week all about Benjamin Bunny, Jemima Puddle-Duck and countless other friends of Peter Rabbit.
They were beautiful shows, with hand drawn illustrations and lovely music. My Mum would make sure she’d finished washing up ready to watch it with me, and my Dad would put down his paper to pay attention too. It was lovely, quality time together and a real highlight of our week, before school and work started again the next day. It was definitely a time I felt closest to them both.
Big Brother
I remember watching the first series of Big Brother as a teenager with my parents. Getting to know the characters as the series went on, shouting at the TV when our favourites got evicted or when someone we didn’t like stayed in the house.
It was our first experience of reality TV and one that has always stayed with me. Big Brother created so many familiar faces on the TV and also inspired a whole new genre of TV shows. Back then Big Brother was so fresh and new – and I’m sure I’m not the only one that watched Big Brother and thought about what it might be like to be on TV one day.
I don’t know what I’d do without the TV. It gives us so much quality family time, connecting over a movie or a teen show, shouting at Catch Phrase or ringing in to vote for who we want to win on BGT. TV brings us together as a family and I always look forward to those simple moments, on the sofa together – as well as the big moments that we’ll always remember.
