It goes without saying that the emergency services all do fantastic jobs under great pressures and I am always looking for ways to teach the children about the people in life, outside of their immediate family, who are there to help them when they need it.
Now, thanks to the Paramedic Chris range of books there’s a lovely way to teach children about the fantastic work that the ambulance service do and the various ways that paramedics help people.
The Paramedic Chris fiction books are written as episodes, with the first two episodes available now and another due for release very soon. The author, Tim Parsons, has written the books from his own experience dealing with real life emergency calls with the South East Coast Ambulance Service. This makes the books incredibly informative and realistic.
The first book, Paramedic Chris, introduces you to Chris and Zara, where they work as paramedics and their lives. The books show how busy life is as a paramedic and how it’s not just a nine to five – you have to work weekends when the rest of the family are at home but, they’re doing a really important job and saving lives.
The book teaches children about different kinds of emergencies – from panic attacks that feel like heart attacks to trips, falls and broken bones. It also talks about prank calls and how dangerous they can be, taking the ambulance away from real emergencies.
The second book, Paramedic Chris: A Helping Hand is a smooth follow on from the first book. It talks about helping elderly people get the support they need and how food banks can help people too. The book talks about the side of life as a paramedic that people wouldn’t usually think about – the caring and compassionate side rather than just the accidents and broken bones!
The books feel like larger format Mr Men books to me – with beautiful illustrations on every double page and just the right amount of text to give good structure to the story and keep the children engaged before another illustration appears.
Both books have the same main characters and locations meaning that after the first episode the next one feels so familiar and I can imagine this being a long running series like Fireman Sam.
It’s so lovely to read a book that gives such a positive view of the emergency medical services which helps to teach children about the valuable job that they do – under often difficult circumstances.
I can now imagine other series’ being launched about other emergency and rescue services – full of police, police cars, fire fighters, fire engines and more.
The books are aimed at kids aged 4-10 and I think they would be a great addition to any children’s bookshelf to be enjoyed reading with their families before moving on to reading them independently when they’re a little older. They give a great dose of real life education.
The Paramedic Chris and Paramedic Chris: A Helping Hand books are available on Amazon for £7.99 each or £4.99 on Kindle
My husband recently fell down the stairs (a bit merry at Christmas), luckily, he only broke some ribs but, for a short while, we were assessing if we needed to call an ambulance as we weren’t quite sure what damage had been done. So, perhaps, one where someone was a bit careless when coming down stairs and injured themselves?
Paramedic Chris should cover talks in schools in which children learn how and when to use plasters and bandages.
Paramedic chris the helicopter hero, my children love watching helicopter er so would love a book on the subject, specially for children
Perhaps a storyline based on the seaside, working with coast guards, RNLI etc
Great looking books.
