Music has always been the soundtrack to my life. I love music and have listened to different albums and the radio for as long as I can remember. But one station that has always been consistent for me is Heart. Growing up on the outskirts of London, Heart was the soundtrack to my later teenage years and their feel good music still makes me happy.

This year Heart have created the #HeartFeelGoodChallenge which has inspired me to try something new, an activity to make the whole family feel good and uplifted, motivated by that wonderful feel good vibe that Heart always brings – whether we’re at home or off on an adventure in the car.

The song that always makes me feel great when I hear it on Heart is Pharrell Williams – Happy. It’s a song that brings back memories of a lovely colleague I used to work with and we would dance around together for the four minutes that the song lasted. Even now the song makes me just want to dance – and I’m left feeling so inspired after hearing it.

So, inspired by Happy, I thought back to my childhood and what activities made me happy back then, wanting to recreate this for my own children. I realised that when I was younger I was happiest flying a kite and it’s something we hadn’t really done with the children before and was the perfect new activity to try as a family.

We went out on a windy morning, to a big open field, set the kite up and threw it up into the air. In that moment the children were in awe. They thought it was incredible that they were actually flying a kite and they loved it when their Daddy showed them how to do tricks too. I don’t think I have ever seen the children so happy.

We stayed in that field for probably only an hour – it was far too cold to stay much longer. But, on a pretty crisp and dry day in January where we may have typically stayed at home in the warm, Heart inspired us to get outside, to try something new and to feel so good at the end of it.

We walked back to the car feeling so happy. So energised and so together, as strange as that may sound. Doing an activity as a family meant we were just so present and we had something to talk about for days afterwards. Plus. kite flying is so simple – it’s something we should have done such a long time ago but now I know we’ll take the kite with us on many adventures as I can’t wait to see the children’s ecstatic faces again.

In time they’ll learn to do tricks themselves with the kite – a loop-de-loop or a figure of eight – and they’ll lay on the grass, flying the kite in the sky above them and they will feel so good, so happy and so free. There really is nothing quite like the pride and accomplishment of flying a kite by yourself.

So this year why don’t you try something new too? I challenge you to listen to Heart and feel inspired to give something new a try – do a new activity that makes you feel good. This could be a dance class, going for a run or something amazing like flying in a hot air balloon!

What are you waiting for? Tune into Heart and make it the feel good soundtrack to your day. With songs from the 90s and 00s through to the current hits there is music for everyone and it’s a station that even the children love to sing along to – Heart really is our Happy Place.

  1. I love Happy as well – always makes me want to dance and leaves me feeling cheered up. Amazing how music can do that. And I’ve started making the effort to get outside more, helped by the fact we’ve just moved and can walk to my daughter’s school now, and it’s energising me so much- think we might have to dig out our kite as well.

  2. Ah kite flying really does bring pure joy (well when the strings don’t tangle). We went to a kite festival last year and spent a whole day doing just that or watching displays, we had the best time!

I’m now thinking about what my feel good song would be….

  3. Happy is such a fab song. Such a toe tapper!

We still haven’t taken Eli to fly a kite but Athena and Troy look like they had lots of fun so we must get round to buying one
