Redhead Roundup – Books {October}

Here are a few of the books we have been enjoying this month:

Miffy’s Birthday

Miffy has just celebrated her 60th Birthday and to celebrate we were sent this lovely little hardback book. Each page has one side of writing and one side of lovely illustrations. All the characters are easily recognisable and the story is written in verse which the children loved.

The story is all about how Miffy spends her Birthday from getting dressed to having dinner and going to bed. It includes her family, her presents and her day to day routine. These were all things they children could relate to and they really enjoyed the Miffy’s Birthday story.

Mr Noisy and the Silent Night

We all love Mr Men books and this new addition with a festive theme fits perfectly into Little Man’s existing collection. The book is all about Mr Quiet, his festive visits from Mr Noisy and how the whole festive season is just to noisy for him.

Little Man and LP loved Mr Noisy and the Silent Night as it has familiar characters and the familiar Mr Men format or bold full page illustrations and just enough text to keep them entertained without getting bored. Mr Men books are a great length for bedtime and if you’re looking for a stocking filler this would be perfect!

Fireman Sam The Runaway Santa

We haven’t read any Fireman Sam books before although LP and Little Man love the TV show. Fireman Sam and the Runaway Santa has really lovely illustrated pages that really keep LP and Little Man’s focus. The characters are all familiar from the show and just like on the TV the story has good educational aspects – teaching children about the dangers of overloading plug sockets!

LP and Little Man loved this book and although it does have a festive feel it isn’t overly Christmassy and so could be enjoyed pretty much all year round. It’s the right length for a bedtime story and a great size for little hands to hold.

Peppa Pig: The Story of Prince George

It’s quite cute really that Peppa’s brother shares his name with the royal prince and this book is lovely for any fan of the royals or any Peppa Pig fan. Although not really about the royal prince, The Story of Prince George is a bedtime story about George and the Dragon – a well known story that has been recreated using the great characters from Peppa Pig.

Both LP and Little Man love this story with it’s beautiful illustrations, familiar characters and just enough text to keep them both entertained without getting bored. This is the perfect story for any child moving on from board books and wanting a slightly longer story.

Dairy Diary 2016

I haven’t ever really used a diary but I realised recently that I needed somewhere to record not just Birthdays and appointments but mine and Hubby’s working hours – as they vary drastically from week to week – as well as LP’s school activities and everything else that we get up to. I was sent a copy of the 2016 Dairy Diary and I loved it immediately.

The 2016 Dairy Diary is so much more than a diary. Yes, it has the typical week to view pages but it’s a beautiful ring bound diary that also has a pocket to store thing, stickers to help highlight activities on the diary, units of measure and conversions, pages for budgeting and the whole year at a glance. Each page also includes a seasonal recipe and I’ve found the Dairy Diary invaluable in preparing for next year. I don’t think I’ll use any other diary now.

Just for One or Two Cookbook

Along with the Dairy Diary we were sent the Just for One or Two Cookbook. This cookbook is also spiral bound which I always find a great feature in a cookbook. Each recipe is perfect for just one or two people so great for date nights at home or someone just cooking for themselves although most recipes are also simple to double up to cater for more people too.

The variety of recipes is great with vegetarian options and simple dishes as well as those requiring more time and preparation. All the recipes include beautiful photos that illustrate the recipe well and having read a lot of the recipes in the book I’ve found them to be healthy and well balanced. This will be one of my favourite cookbooks going forward.

Peppa Pig: Peppa Goes Ice Skating

LP and Little Man love Peppa Goes Ice Skating. Featuring all their favourite Peppa Pig characters the book shows how both Peppa and George learn to ice skate – something that LP and Little Man are excited about learning themselves at some point.

This book has really thick and durable board pages with enough of a story to keep both LP and Little Man entertained. It’s the perfect length for a bedtime story and a great read over the autumn and winter months.

First 20 Numbers

Little Man is learning to count but doesn’t know what different numbers look like so First 20 Numbers is perfect to help teach him to count. Along with numbers the book features lots of images that he can easily recognise – like toys and fruit – and has flaps to lift too. It;s a really interactive book with cut out thick board pages that add interest and are easy for him to turn.

This is a great book for any child just starting to learn their numbers with a lot to keep them interested and pages that are full of colour and things to look at. Little Man loves it and will happily sit for ages just looking at the pages – a great book.

Pumpkins, Pumpkins Everywhere

Our latest Parragon Book Buddy delivery was Pumpkins, Pumpkins Everywhere. This book is great for this time of year and has pages full to bursting with Halloween and trick or treat images that any child will love.

LP and Little Man are just learning about Halloween and this book is great for showing what Halloween celebrations are really about without using too many words. The writing is this book is very short with mainly just a couple of words per page but the words really emphasise the images which kept LP entertained for ages.

Disclosure: We were sent some of the above books for the purpose of this review however all opinions are my own.
