I had my first trip to Petersfield last month, although it’s somewhere I have driven past so many times but hadn’t stopped before. However, this time I went to Petersfield with purpose – parking easily at Petersfield Lake, walking around the lake and pottering around the charity shops before discovering a real hidden gem – Petersfield Physic Garden.

What is Petersfield Physic Garden?
Situated just behind Petersfield High Street, Petersfield Physic Garden is a really lovely green space in an otherwise fairly urban area. It’s a private garden which opens to the public and has been created in a 17th Century style.

Physic gardens are gardens full of plants that are thought to have medicinal properties. The Petersfield Physic Garden features beds laid out in geometric shapes and a formal pattern along with many formal herb beds.

The garden also features a topiary walk, a knot garden, an informal orchard with wild flowers and a rose arch along with benches throughout the space to admire the plants and garden from all angles. Another great example of a physic garden is Chelsea Physic Garden.

Visiting Petersfield Physic Garden
The Petersfield Physic Garden isn’t very big and isn’t really somewhere to spend hours exploring. But, it’s somewhere you can wander around and appreciate as well as spending time sitting in the garden and just enjoying the space.

We enjoyed wander along the garden paths, admiring the plants, flowers and trees. There were a lot of people throughout the garden when we visited and it’s clearly a really popular space locally.

Part of the garden is currently cordoned off whilst repairs are undertaken but that didn’t effect our visit at all. We were still able to wander around the whole garden and appreciate all the plants it contained.

Petersfield Physic Garden is open daily, free to visit and has plenty of seating for visitors to rest and enjoy the space. Plus, the paths are pushchair and wheelchair friendly. There’s also a small shop and plants for sale.

We really loved seeing Petersfield Physic Garden and I know that we’d spend time there on any future visit to the garden. It’s a real hidden gem that you could easily miss if you didn’t know it was there.
