The Next Boxing Day Sale

The Next Boxing Day Sale. You either love it, hate it or just couldn’t care less. I was introduced to the Next sale a few years ago by Hubby and my Mother In Law, both of which were huge Next sale fans and raved about the bargains they had managed to buy. I resisted temptation to go on the basis that 5am doesn’t exist, it was a time I never saw and one that was definitely for sleeping.

This all changed though when I was pregnant with LP and suffering insomnia anyway, I dragged myself off to Next with my lovely Mother in Law at 4:30am on Boxing Day. That was a day that would cement a tradition we have been practicing twice a year ever since.

I get up at stupid o’clock, queue up outside Next for up to an hour and go in with the aim of getting all of LP and Little Man’s next size of clothes. So this Boxing Day I got to Next at 5:15am and joined the queue. I was number 410 by this point and some people had been waiting since before midnight!

At 6am the doors opened and everyone filed into the store in quite a civilised fashion. There’s a definite tactic to the Next sale – grab everything in the size you need and think about it later – you either buy everything ot find somewhere to stand to look through your haul – this is my preferred option although it is definitely frowned upon by Next staff who would rather you just bought it and brought it back in a few days time.

By this point I usually have two huge bags full of stuff and queue up to pay for up to another hour with my arms feeling like they’re going to drop off. I have learnt though that it is best to be in and out within an hour – the queues are at their smallest although giving myself an hour limit means that I often have zero energy to even look at the adult things.

This year I left Next and was home in bed by 7am. I had spent £180 and got around £450 worth of ‘stuff’ – clothing for the kids, some Christmas gifts for next year and a couple of things for the house. It was definitely well spent and a tradition that keeps the kids in quality clothing and stops me ever having to buy clothes because they’ve outgrown the current size – I always have a stash of clothes in the next size – yes, I’m a little bit of a hoarder too!

Before the Next sale starts they have a Next Sale preview online where you can see what will be on offer to start making a shopping list. You can always do the Next sale online and if you shop there regularly you can book a VIP slot and hope you’re one of the first to start shopping and have access to the sale section to get as many of the items on your wish list as possible. But the online sale has never been very good for me.

So, the Boxing Day sale at Next, do you love it, hate it or are you yet to experience it?

My husband went to the summer one when the girls were teeny as we were up and he made the mistake of grabbing and not sorting before leaving the shop – and it came to £900!!!!!! He’s never been trusted to go since. Love the little Star Wars top x

I wanted to join this years sales but didn’t in the end because of being so heavily pregnant.
I did go to the summer sale last year though at 6am. I was only in 15 mins later and was only able to pick up 2 things. I am really bad at these sales it seems. I prefer doing it online but usually there is not much stuff left.
Next St Stephen’s Day I am definitely queuing up.

You are a braver lady than me! I have never had the courage to actually go to the shops. I do do the next sale online and like you I too try and buy sizes in advance for the children to grow into. I get great baby stuff, but as Logan gets older I struggle to get older children’s clothes they go so fast!

Wow, you got loads! Go you! I never go to these sales, I’m too scared I’ll get trampled on haha 😉 x

I do sales, and I always but the kids things in the next size up ready, too, but I’ve never done the getting up early and queuing thing. I just pop in or go on-line and get my things that way – far lazier! x

I’m impressed. I have never been brave enough to tackle the next sale as I’m not a good sale person. I did have a vip pass for the online sale but totally forgot about it!

I went to my first next sale this summer and I did get some great stuff but boxing day is crossing a line for me. There is also the fact that I don’t drive that rules it out even further, but I am jealous looking at your stash and seeing things I wanted for the boys!

When I lived in Oxford, and even when I moved back here, I used to do the Next sale in Oxford when it was on the 27th. I’d be there at 5 to queue for 6 opening, be in and out within 20 minutes (I was only shopping for me at that stage), and back home by 7.

I’d not do it on boxing day though, we don’t go shopping on that day (well, apart from online), and I’ve not found the sale as good as it used to. Now I wouldn’t be able to anyway, because N’s still in bed at that time, and the OH’s already working from 5, so I haven’t got anyone to look after N.

It is great fun though. In Oxford, we’d always be in the same place in the queue, someone would open their cafe early and do drinks orders, you’d see people going home from clubs, and you’d see the same people year in year out. Plus of course the bargains. This year I got a fairly early VIP online slot. I’m not sure why because I only buy twice a year online in the sales. The items I wanted had already gone, but I did get quite a few things for N and a couple for me, plus new jeans for the OH.

Looks like you got a fab haul, personally I couldn’t face getting up at that time of day, and I do always feel for the staff who have to work, but that said if you want to do then it is certainly worth it for the bargains that can be found x

  10. January 3, 2015 / 10:18 pm

Oh my goodness, this really is a haul! I’m in total awe as I’ve never managed to get myself organised enough to get up or even book an internet slot! Nice work Donna 🙂

  11. January 3, 2015 / 11:57 pm

I’m so impressed that you got up so early and did it! I couldn’t – I’m too attracted by online shopping from my warm bed! Great haul though lovely x

  12. January 4, 2015 / 10:32 am

This proves that the early bird really does get the worm! I love Next but I could never go that early on Boxing Day. I wish I had your willpower! xx

  13. January 4, 2015 / 11:21 pm

I worked it once – hell on earth. I’ve never actually been down to the sale but I do try to stock up in my online slot! It’s always hard to get stuff for the boys though

  14. January 5, 2015 / 8:08 pm

I have to say that the Next sale would be my idea of hell on earth. Love their clothes but I couldn’t do it. Looks like you grabbed some real bargains though, so glad it was worth the early get up x
