Having started a bit of a health kick a couple of weeks ago, I was asked by Simply Health to talk about fitness – how I keep fit and my fitness goals. Anyone that knows me will know that fitness didn’t feature in my life for at least the first 29 years of my existence but then I started running and have never looked back.
Over the last year I have run on and off but my running has always had something get in the way – sickness, dodgy knees, poorly children, lack of childcare, winter… But two weeks ago I made a fitness plan and I am hoping to stick to it.
I have set myself the goal of running twice a week as a minimum and I would love to run three times a week but I know with Dave’s shifts and my working days it isn’t always possible to get out that often. Twice a week is something achievable that I can definitely stick to.
I know though that I always find running in the winter harder and last winter I often felt nervous – of the dark, of the wet and icy conditions or just the cold. Running in winter was never fun so I have decided that when the winter starts to show I am going to be joining a local gym and running there instead. Who knows, I may even try and start some classes or use other machines besides the treadmill but for starters I am planning on just running. Joining a gym is a huge thing for me and so I know I need to take it one step at a time.
The only fitness goal I set at the start of the year was to finish the 8 weeks of Couch to 5k but when I started running two weeks ago I decided to stop using Couch to 5k and just run for myself, as much as I could without worrying about ticking any boxes on an app. Since then I have been running a bit, walking a bit, running a bit etc and using Run Keeper to keep track of the runs I complete. My aim over the coming months is to increase my general fitness and stamina with the end goal being to run 5k non-stop. You never know, next year I may actually sign up for an official 5k run, or even a 10k run but for now, 5k of continuous running is my main goal.
Do you have any fitness goals at the moment? I’m loving having a bit of fitness in my life and feel so much better for it.
