Milkshake! Live The Magic Story Book Tour at The Anvil, Basingstoke

LP and Little Man have loved Milkshake! for years – they watch it on TV and have the Milkshake DVDs too, loving so many of the Milkshake! shows. So when we heard that Milkshake! was touring in their new Milkshake! Live theatre production we just had to go.

Milkshake! Live The Magic Story Book Tour came to our favourite local theatre – The Anvil in Basingstoke – last weekend and is heading off around the country over the next couple of months. The story follows Milkshake! Monkey in his quest to be a real Prince.

The Fairy Godmother gives him and the Milkshake! gang a special fairy tale book where they can visit different fairy tales to see which one Milkshake! Monkey wanted to be in, featuring as a prince.

The show had a screen at the front where the Fairy Godmother would appear – as well as the names of the fairy tales that we found ourselves watching. It was a great way of showing aspects of the story without needing more actors on stage or more dialogue and the children thought the screen was real magic.

Milkshake! Live The Magic Story Book Tour started off with Dick Whittington where Fireman Sam came to save the day. As soon as Fireman Sam appeared on stage the audience were beside themselves – it was just so exciting for everyone watching and you could tell that the audience was full of little Milkshake! fans.

Soon, we were watching Cinderella where the Little Princess played games with us and the cast followed by Hansel and Gretel featuring Winnie the Witch – who managed to turn Milkshake! Monkey into a teapot, much to LP and Little Man’s delight! They love a spot of magic and Milkshake! Live was full of it as well as special effects, smoke machines and a fantastic soundtrack full of all their favourite Milkshake! songs.

The interval arrived just after we had seen Noddy in Jack and the Beanstalk and was a nice place to cut the show before the second half. The show did go on for nearly two hours including the interval and I do think the interval was a little long and the show overall was quite long for younger children – although LP and Little Man loved it and were engaged throughout. Some younger children were clearly restless by the end though so I would think Milkshake! Live is best suited for children who are around three and over.

The second half kicked off with a brief appearance from Pip Ahoy before we were whisked away to see Shimmer and Shine in Aladdin. This was one of the best songs in the show, with all the children singing along to Shimmer and Shine, Oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh, Genies divine. The songs really pulled you in to each story and the children loved hearing their favourite songs from their favourite shows live on stage – with the characters really there in front of them too.

Next up we were in Three Little Pigs and Bob the Builder came to build them a new brick house. By this point even the adults were singing along and dancing to Bob’s boots, belt, hard hat song. But, before long we were in Goldilocks with Wissper who talked to the three bears and taught everyone how to share.

The show ended with a grand finale of the cast and characters coming our to dance on stage. At this point the children were a bit confused as not every Milkshake! character they’d seen came out on stage – as would usually happen in other theatre productions. Obviously there weren’t enough cast members to be all of the Milkshake! characters at once but the children soon got past that and loved the final dance and the big ending the show gave.

Milkshake! Live The Magic Story Book Tour left us smiling and singing for hours afterwards. LP and Little Man loved seeing so many characters live on stage and they were so into the show all the way through. It’s a really feel good show with so many little lessons to learn through it – and one big lesson that Milkshake! Monkey learnt at the end. This really is a show the whole family will love and to find out if Milkshake! Live is coming to a theatre near you, check their full listings on their website.
