Our Honeymoon – Mexico

Our wedding has to be the single largest expense of our lives aside from buying a house. After 15 months of saving, planning and stress we wanted a honeymoon that would allow us to really relax and wind down after the wedding, somewhere we could enjoy the first weeks of our married life and somewhere that had lots for us to do as well as relaxing days on the beach.

After a lot of research on websites like Perfect Honeymoons Abroad we decided to go to Mexico. It was somewhere we had always wanted to visit with a lot of culture, good food and a huge amount to do. We booked our honeymoon about six months before the wedding and couldn’t wait to board the plane!

We booked two weeks in the Catalonia Riviera Maya all inclusive resort with direct flights and a room upgrade to give us a four poster bed and sunken bath on the terrace. The hotel was beautiful with multiple restaurants as well as the standard all inclusive style buffet and even an all you can eat creperie – I would visit again just for that!

Whilst we were in Mexico we spent alternate days on the beach and went for days out on the others. We booked all our excursions through the hotel and saw most of Mexico in the space of our two weeks. We went to Chichen Itza, one of the hottest places I have ever been to as it has no shade and felt as I would at seeing the pyramids – how can something so big and beautiful have been built so long ago?!

We also went to Coba, Tulum and stopped off for a dip in one of the many Mexican Cenotes. There are so many places in Mexico to swim and relax like Xel-ha and Xcaret. We spent the day at Xel-ha but could have easily spent a week there with lagoons to swim in, rubber rings to laze in and iguanas to make friends with.

We saw so many basic Mexican villages, had jeep rides through the jungle and got to experience authentic Mexican cuisine, shared village toilets and even see village schools in action. It was nice to get an insight of not just the tourist sights of the country but a glimpse into the native side of Mexico too.

The most beautiful place we visited in Mexico was Isla Contoy, an unspoilt paradise. We were able to relax on the beach, snorkel and enjoy a barbecue of fresh fish. It really couldn’t have been better! We even had a boat ride there and back with places to stop and snorkel – seeing exotic fish and even turtles!

When visiting Mexico there is just so much to do – like most countries as a tourist and trying to prioritise what we wanted to see was one of the hardest decisions to make. If I had the opportunity to choose my honeymoon again I would choose Mexico in an instant. Mexico is the perfect honeymoon destination and had the right balance of relaxation and things to do.

Where did you go on honeymoon? Would you make the same decision if you could book it all over again?
