From Westeros to Your Living Room: How Australians Can Watch Game of Thrones

*This is a collaborative guest post

Not many shows have become part of popular culture quite like Game of Thrones. Even years after the final episode aired, fans are returning to Westeros to revisit its battles, betrayals and dragons. Many viewers are only now discovering what all the excitement was about, and they start watching the story from its very beginnings.

But finding Australian streaming options for Game of Thrones isn’t always easy. HBO programmes have moved between different services over the years, so older advice about where to watch may not be accurate at the moment. Fortunately, the current options for streaming Game of Thrones Down Under are much more approachable.

Where Can You Find Game of Thrones Streaming?

Finding Game of Thrones used to be a bit confusing for Aussie viewers, since HBO programmes were spread across different services. The arrival of HBO Max in Australia in March 2025 made things much simpler. All eight seasons are now available to watch in one place.

If you’re not sure where to begin, you can check out a detailed guide explaining how to stream Game of Thrones in Australia. It covers what you need to know before settling in for your return to Westeros.

You can subscribe to HBO Max directly or access it through the HBO Max channel on Amazon Prime Video. Foxtel IQ is another option for streaming Game of Thrones, which may be more convenient if you already use the service. Some eligible Foxtel users can also access HBO Max through their existing package, so it’s best to check what your subscription includes before paying for something new.

You prefer not to add another monthly subscription? In that case, you can consider buying the complete series through Apple TV, Amazon Video and Fetch TV. Keep in mind that buying all seasons will cost more upfront. However, the material is yours to keep. You can return to your favourite episodes without maintaining an ongoing streaming subscription. The availability and prices can change, so check each service before deciding.

Choosing How to Watch HBO Shows in Australia

The right way to watch depends on how quickly you plan to make your way through all eight seasons.

  • HBO Max’s Basic with Ads plan costs A$11.99 per month. It gives you access in Full HD on two devices at the same time.
  • The A$15.99 Standard plan removes the ads and allows up to 30 downloads, which can be useful if you want to watch while travelling.
  • The Premium plan costs A$21.99 per month. It supports four simultaneous streams, 4K picture quality and Dolby Atmos on compatible devices. It also allows up to 100 downloads.

Paying extra for Premium may not make much difference if your television doesn’t support 4K or you’re the only person using the account. If you’re only interested in watching Game of Thrones on a single device, the Basic or Standard plan may be a smarter choice.

With 73 episodes to get through, completing the series within one month means watching more than two episodes every day. A slower pace may stretch across two or three monthly payments. Instead of looking only at the advertised monthly price, it’s best to consider the total cost. Annual subscriptions save you money, but they only make sense if you plan to watch HBO content beyond Game of Thrones.

If you already have an eligible Foxtel iQ package, check if HBO Max access is included before starting a separate subscription.

Plan Well Before You Start Your Game of Thrones Marathon

Watching Game of Thrones from beginning to end? That’s quite a commitment! The complete series runs for roughly 70 hours. Even two episodes each evening would take more than a month to finish. You could race through it faster, but some of the political alliances, family connections and smaller details are easier to follow when you give each episode a little space to sink in.

It’s also worth remembering that this isn’t one for a casual family TV night. The series contains graphic violence, sex scenes, nudity and some genuinely disturbing moments. Younger children wandering into the room at the wrong time could see far more of Westeros than you intended. Late-evening viewing may be the safest choice in a family home.

The Australian Classification website explains what the country’s different age ratings mean. It can help you decide whether a show is suitable for older teenagers. Game of Thrones is restricted to 18+ because of high impact sex scenes and violence. For parents, this means saving Westeros until the children are safely asleep. The episodes run for close to an hour, so it’s probably not a series you’ll squeeze in before bedtime. A couple of evenings a week may be more realistic than planning an ambitious nightly marathon.

What to Watch After the Final Episode

Finishing all eight seasons will leave quite a gap in your evening routine. But you don’t have to leave Westeros right away. House of the Dragon travels back nearly 200 years to explore the history of House Targaryen, complete with another disputed succession, complicated family relationships and plenty of dragons.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set between the events of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones. It follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire, Egg. It’s a smaller and more personal story, but it still takes place in the familiar world created by George R. R. Martin.

How about a complete change of scenery? You can watch other HBO shows, such as The Last of Us, Succession, and The White Lotus. None of them can replace Westeros, but each offers another absorbing story to settle into.
