When we moved into our home we were in the very early stages on my pregnancy with LP and so decorating was put aside and since then we have only decorated when we have needed to and not just because we wanted to. LP’s nursery was already decorated by the previous owners, then we decorated our bathroom after having downlights and an extractor fan fitted and decorated LP’s big girl bedroom shortly before Little Man arrived.
We decided a few months ago that this year’s decorating project would be our bedroom – I really wanted a nice, warm, relaxing bedroom instead of the dumping group that it had become. Our bed was broken, chest of drawers falling apart and storage space was limited. I decided that our first investment would be a bed with storage in it but I was adamant that I wanted a wooden bed frame and storage drawers rather than a pull up ottoman style bed. I ended up with only about three to choose from and settled on this Sweet Dreams Wagner King Size bed because of the price and style.
My next purchase was our bedding. I wanted bedding that was colourful, bright and fun but also looked snuggly and something we could all relax under on a weekend morning and watch cartoons. I saw this bedding in Next over a year ago and had hoped to buy it in the Xmas sale but it wasn’t reduced. It was finally in the Summer sale and I had to scour the clearance section online at all times of day and night to finally get the bedding but it was worth it – I love it! I also bought some patterned sheets and pillowcases to blend in more than plain ones – These were a bargain from Primark and I love them.
With bedding and bed sorted I then had to decide on a colour for the walls. I wanted something warm and cosy but nothing too bright and overwhelming. We’ve always had beige bedrooms and I like having a neutral colourscheme so that I can easily accessorize with the bedding and other bits and pieces. In the end I chose grey and I love how it has turned out. It’s not a colour I would have got too excited about before but thought it would be a great backdrop for my bedding and I am so happy with it.
I decided to have silver accents in the room and bought curtains, blinds, curtain poles and tie back hooks from various places online. I already had my dressing table mirror that Dave put on the wall for me now that we knew where it was going and we’d bought our Ikea lamps and ceiling light a good few months ago when we had some rewiring done in our bedroom.
We have also invested in new bedside tables – solid wood and only £31 for the pair on eBay! I was also scouring eBay for a new chest of drawers but after being bid up to £200+ for far too many I found somewhere that could make a bespoke chest of drawers that will fit perfectly into our bedroom and will cost less than most ready made ones. I’ll give a mini update when it arrives! Our bedroom is a collection of lots of different wooden furniture pieces, one focal point being our enormous wardrobe which was another eBay bargain a couple of years ago. It’s 8ft tall and purpose built for a period house – the one time I loved having high ceilings was finding this on eBay for just £70.
Our new bedroom is now complete apart from a new carpet which we will get sometime after next summer as it will be the same carpet throughout our upstairs and hallway. The carpet is definitely worse for wear since our smurf suicide incident but I can live without for now until we replace the lot. The only other things I want to do is make our workspace a bit prettier and put something on the wall behind. I also want to find a focus for the wall behind the bed too. So just little touches needed now really.
So there’s our bedroom. I am so pleased with it and after sleeping on a mattress on the floor for nearly two weeks I am incredibly pleased to be sleeping in a bed again!
