Dave and I aren’t big on Valentines – we don’t go out for a meal or do anything special really but we do exchange cards and we always make time to have at least one meal of the day together on Valentines Day. This can be hard with our working pattern and on previous years we’ve had a date night at home but this year we’ll be having breakfast together – no doubt whilst the children play and watch TV.
Usually Dave and I skip breakfast, being in a rush to get LP to school or get to work ourselves. On the times we do have breakfast we will grab something quick – SlimFast shakes for me and cereal bars for Dave. Very rarely we’ll be at home, as a family and won’t have anywhere to rush off to. On those days we’ll have a proper breakfast – bacon and eggs or pancakes.
Because those times are rare it’s nice for Dave and I to be able to take the time for Valentines to have a treat breakfast together. It won’t be anything fancy – fruit, yogurt and granola, orange juice and some pastries. He’ll probably have a coffee as well and I’ll have a pot of tea.
We’ll eat our breakfast and take the time to catch up, to focus on us as a couple and to just have time together whilst the children play happily. It’ll be a lazy morning but a lovely one and something we don’t do very often.
I’ve invested in some new plates, new glassware and a new tray from Homesense purely for breakfasts and I want to make our Valentines treat not just for Valentines, but whenever we get the chance to have a lazy breakfast together. I know there will be times where we could all have breakfast in bed together – the children eating toast and watching cartoons. Sometimes being together, even just at home is lovely and it’s something we try and do quite often – just be and appreciate that time together. But we don’t do anything to mark the occasion – until now.
A Valentines breakfast that will completely change the way our family has breakfast going forward. No longer a rushed meal in the few minutes between getting ready and leaving home but instead, as often as possible, it will be a time to catch up, talk, laugh and be together.
