If you follow me on social media you will by now have noticed that we’ve been lucky enough to be reviewing the Silver Cross Surf 2. The Surf is a hugely popular pushchair and Silver Cross have taken the features that were loved by millions worldwide and added a few additions to improve on the Surf even more with the new Surf 2.

What were our first impressions of the Silver Cross Surf 2?

When we received the Surf 2 everything came in one big box apart from the hood and apron which came as an additional item (included in the packed price) – This means that you can easily change the colour of the Surf 2 to suit the season, the child or even your decor at home – And with so many colours to choose from you may want to have more than one! We chose the Aubergine because I am a huge fan of purple and wanted something unisex. The colour didn’t disappoint and looks fantastic! We have also been sent the Silver Cross Surf 2 Buggy Board (sold separately) which I have reviewed in a separate post but will feature in some photos in this post.

How easy was the Silver Cross Surf 2 to put together?

When I emptied the box I was slightly daunted by the amount of ‘bits’ and I made sure I unwrapped them all carefully so as not to damage the sleek aluminium frame of the Surf 2. Once everything was out of the box I realised that the only thing I actually had to do was push the wheels onto the chassis – It couldn’t be simpler! The carrycot or pushchair seat then click in easily and the apron and hood fix in place with a zip and a click! I don’t think I have come across a pushchair that is easier to put together that the Surf 2, you really cannot do it wrong.

The Silver Cross Surf 2 now comes complete with a carrycot attachment. This is incredibly sturdy, full lined and complete with mattress which makes the Surf 2 great to use from newborn. The apron and hood fit on both the carrycot and pushchair seat so there is no need to buy anything extra. The Surf 2 could easily be turned into a travel system with the addition of Simplicity car seats and adapters are included in the Surf 2 package.

What is the Silver Cross Surf 2 carrycot like?

The Surf 2 carrycot is suitable for overnight sleeping so could be used as a moses basket downstairs during the day or on holidays to save on the amount of luggage you’re taking with you. The Surf 2 carrycot really is the perfect lay flat newborn option.

The Surf 2 pushchair seat is really sturdy but still padded and comfortable. It has a five point harness that’s easy to operate and there are multiple harness positions to suit your child as they grow. The harness was simple to change to fit Little Man and he felt really secure in it. The pushchair seat also has a three position recline including lie flat and is easy to recline by pushing buttons in either side of the pushchair. The pushchair seat does feel slightly heavy when moving it back up to a sitting position from laying flat though and it would help if you only needed one hand to push the buttons in to recline/straighten the seat. Needing both hands to press buttons on either side does make it more difficult to tilt the seat at the same time but I often used my knee to push the seat down.

How did we find the Silver Cross Surf 2 to use?

Little Man has always been comfortable in the pushchair seat and I love the built in footrest that he will use as he gets older. The leatherette bumper bar with Silver Cross branding is a beautiful addition and is easy to put on, take off or even just undo one side for easy access. The hood is lovely and big giving full sun protection with three sections completely blocking out the sun – Only Little Man’s legs are ever in the sun and the rest of him completely shaded, it’s a great size hood. One small thing that I really like about the Surf 2 hood is that when you fold it back when not in use each part of the frame folds inside each other making it very compact. The hood also incorporates a viewing window with magnetic catch so you can check on baby without bothering them. The magnetic hatch is a lovely little feature that I haven’t seen on a pushchair before.

What is the Silver Cross Surf 2 rain cover like?

Also included with the Surf 2 is a raincover. This raincover is amazingly well fitting and easy to fit with an elasticated edge. The black edging on the raincover and Silver Cross branding add to the quality look and feel of the Silver Cross Surf 2. Rain covers usually look cheap and plasticky, this one looks well made and does the job perfectly with no gaps to let rain in.

The pushchair seat can be either forward facing or parent facing although in parent facing mode it is harder to access the shopping basket. The Surf 2 shopping basket is larger than the previous model however it is still on the small side. The Silver Cross Surf 2 frame is aluminium which makes it very lightweight. It is fairly compact when collapsed but unfortunately doesn’t fold with the seat unit attached. It also isn’t the most straightforward of folds – Having to push the handle in, fold it over and press a lever with your foot at the same time but once you’ve got used to the fold it becomes second nature and collapses in seconds. I’ve made a little video to explain the folding mechanism a little better:

One of my favourite features of the Surf 2 is the extending handle which really does extend quite considerably but also allows for a more compact fold. The handle is also leatherette with chrome detailing and is lovely to push. The Surf 2 pushes like a dream and I’m putting that down to the air suspension with the added bonus of puncture free tyres. The tyres are a great size and make going over uneven ground a breeze. The push down foot brake is easy to operate and locks into place with a satisfying click.

What are our overall thoughts of the Silver Cross Surf 2?

We have loved using the Silver Cross Surf 2 pram with our baby and toddler. It’s an ideal pushchair from newborn and the addition of the Surf 2 Surf Board, which I’ll be reviewing later, makes it great if you already have an older child or if you’re planning on more children in the future. It really is a pushchair that can grow with your family.

Some people adore pushchairs and go crazy over a new design, I’ve never been like that and have always favoured practicality over design in pushchairs but the Surf 2 isn’t just a great pushchair to use, it looks beautiful too. I have had a lot of comments when out and about with the Surf 2 and it is always getting admiring glances. If you’re looking for a pushchair that looks and feels stylish yet will fit effortlessly into your day to day life then Silver Cross Surf 2 may be the pushchair for you and it’s one of the best travel systems we have ever used.

The Silver Cross Surf 2 complete with carrycot has an RRP of £700. Silver Cross also has newer pushchairs available – the Silver Cross Pioneer and Silver Cross Wave.
