Magazines {The Ordinary Moments}

We have a little bit of a tradition in our house – magazines. Whenever we go on a long journey, a couple of hours in the car, we pick magazines up for the children to keep them entertained, have a little treat and be something else to do that doesn’t involve staring at the in-car DVD players.

LP and Little Man love magazines – there’s always a free toy or other treat with them and the pages are full of bright colours and so much to look at. They spend hours scouring the pages, reading stories, looking at pictures and doing activities – a magazine to them is like the most wonderful treat – and one that just keeps on giving.

I know some people think that magazines are a waste of money or a big expense but for us they’re great value for money, and something that has turned into a regular part of our lives. After they have read the magazines on that first car journey they take the toys into the house with them – sometimes the magazines too – for the colouring and drawing activities.

But then the magazine returns to the car to keep them company on another journey. They swap magazines, share them and read them often. They end up with half a dozen magazines in a pile between their car seats, everything from Thomas and Friends to Mr Tumble and Andy’s Amazing Adventures. It gives them so much choice of things to read, so much variety and makes our car journeys so much smoother. They’ll even pick them up on the way to school for a quick flick through before their school day begins.

  1. We don’t buy magazines regularly so like you they are a real treat. I went for breakfast with the girls a few weeks ago whilst the boys were at the cinema and they sat lovely pouring over these magazines we had gotten. So lovely and so simple.

  2. It’s funny, we do exactly the same, although J struggles to read at the moment the toys, stickers and colouring keep her occupied when we travel. It’s a great little tradition isn’t it (as long as they don’t select musical instruments as the add on!) x

  3. I do think they are pretty pricey, but can you put a cost on a peaceful car journey free of nagging? lol. We totally do this too, and big it up. I love their excitement at getting a mag and the time they take in deciding which one. x #ordinarymoments

  4. I don’t buy magazines often, I tend to spend time reading when I can. I do buy writing ones now and again, but you know when you picked them up, it’s nice to have a wee read. The kids ones can be useful at times, they are expensive for what they are, but can be useful for amusing them. xx

  5. Both my older two love magazines – especially the random toys that come with them. My mum or Ells mum often buys them as a treat, and their little faces always light up. Gorgeous pics xx
